ABSTRACT
This study attempted to determine the impact of the social environment on media ethics among journalists in the Uyo city. The study’s objectives were to: determine whether the social environment influences news coverage; discover how the social environment influences media ethics among journalists in Uyo metropolis;
identify the factors that comprise the social environment; and identify the various ethics of media practice that govern journalists’ reportage.
The study’s population is 418, with 204 respondents selected using Taro Yamane’s algorithm using a multi-stage selection approach. The survey method was utilised as the research strategy in this study, and the measuring instrument was a questionnaire with 12 items.
Using social responsibility and social learning theories of communication as theoretical frameworks, the study discovered that journalists are affected by the environment in which they work, which in turn has an impact on the entire process of news gathering, processing, and dissemination of information to the public.
Data for the study were examined using tables and simple percentages. The study’s findings revealed that journalists in the Uyo metropolitan are heavily influenced by their social milieu when reporting.
The study determined that journalism, like other professions, has a direct impact on citizens and society as a whole; practitioners are required to follow a code of behaviour, with which members must scrupulously conform. The study suggests that journalists be aware of their position in society in terms of information distribution.
