INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study
The environment is man’s immediate surroundings, which he manipulates for his survival; improper manipulation brings risks, making this environment dangerous and impeding worker productivity. Thus, the workplace comprises an atmosphere in which this individual executes his work (Chapins 1995).

An effective workplace is an environment in which results can be produced as intended by management (Mike, 2010, Shikder 2002). The physical environment influences how people in an organisation interact, do activities, and are led.

The physical environment, as a component of this work environment, has directly affected the human sense and gently altered interpersonal relationships and hence productivity.

This is because the qualities of a room or meeting space for a group have an impact on productivity and satisfaction levels. In today’s business world, the most important component in keeping an employee satisfied is their office environment.

Today’s workplace is unique, diverse, and ever-changing, and the traditional employer-employee relationship has been thrown on its head. Workers are living in a booming economy with nearly endless work prospects.

This combination of circumstances has resulted in an environment in which the company values its people more than the employees value the company (Smith, 2011).

Lighting and other elements, like as ergonomic furniture, have been shown to improve employee health (Dilani 2004; Milton, Glencross, & Walters, 2000; Veitch Newsham, 2000) and productivity.

This is because light has a significant impact on employees’ physical, physiological, and psychological health, as well as their overall job performance. Ambient aspects in office settings, such as lighting

Temperature, the presence of windows, freedom of mobility, and other physical environment components appear to influence employees’ attitudes, behaviours, satisfaction, performance, and productivity (Larsen, Adams, Deal, Kweon, & Tyler, 1998; Veitch & Gifford, 1996).

Closed office floor plans, whether each person has their own office or there are only a few workers in each closed office, provide employees with more privacy than open plan office layouts.

They have the opportunity to work in a calm environment, keeping them focused on the duties at hand rather than being overly distracted by what their coworkers are doing.

It allows employees to think freely or be creative with little interruption (Mubexm, 2001). Noise in the open office plane is stressful and demotivating, with a high level of distraction and disturbance, as well as a limited level of privacy (Evan & Johnson, 2000).

With technology advancements, creative communication methods, virtual reality, e-market improvement, and changing work patterns, the workplace continues to evolve swiftly (Challenger, 2000).

To handle these quick changes while preserving or improving performance, organisations have increasingly adopted some form of environment, such as open office space (Terricone and Luca, 2002). This style of work environment promotes fresh ideas.
