INSECURITY AS THREAT TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
ABSTRACT
The study provides a philosophical and theoretical examination of insecurity as a danger to national development. The study is very essential at this point in Nigeria’s history. The obvious challenges of insurgency, terrorism,
arms trafficking, ethnic conflict, arm thievery, and so on pose a significant danger to national security and development. The study proposes strategies to reduce and remove insecurity in order to promote national development.
INTRODUCTION
In Nigeria, the expanding nature of insurgency, terrorism, arm robbery, kidnappings, corruption, and ethnic crisis, among other things, pose a devastating threat to life and property security.
The insecurity of citizens’ lives and possessions is a major impediment to effective progress. Fear will intimidate both domestic and foreign investors. Many of these conflicts revolve around access to resources and control over the distribution of benefits.
This resource fight has resulted in widespread instability, opportunism, and the pursuit of self-help measures across the country. Godfatherism, poverty, unemployment, money and politics, corruption,
small arms proliferation, the growth of armed organisations, religious-based violence, and election fraud are some of the causes of violence. These issues constitute dividing lines in communities, resulting in increased conflicts between and within groups.
CHAPITRE 1
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Violence and corruption, for example, have a negative impact on a country’s economy. A corrupt nation cannot be economically viable, nor can the system create enough support/ love to ensure the survival of the democratic system. This is the scenario in Nigeria,
where corruption has become ingrained in the political culture. Corruption has indeed deprived Nigerians of the benefits of economic growth by diverting scarce available money that should have been used to carry out development projects into private offshore accounts.
Corruption is common in Nigeria, not because the people are different from those in other areas of the world, but because the conditions are favourable. There are numerous explanations for this. The population’s motivation to earn an income is substantially stronger, which is compounded by poverty, unemployment, and poor salaries.
Accountability is generally lacking in many impoverished countries, including Nigeria. Political competition and civil liberties are frequently curtailed. Laws and ethical concepts in governance are underdeveloped, and the legal institutions tasked with enforcing them are underprepared.147,148.
Many regard the June 2011 bombing of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the September bombing of the United Nations facility in Abuja as a brazen assault not just on the nation’s intelligence but also as a warning that no one is safe.
The current condition of instability in Nigeria lends validity to the report that abduction is an outgrowth of the Niger Delta conflict. This insurrection has cast a massive cloud of instability not only over the entire south-south geopolitical zone, but also over the southeast and southwest. Kidnapping gangs have turned the two zones into safe havens.
No one is safe in this new wave of crime, which appears to have replaced armed robbery and other non-contact crimes. However, the security threat this poses to Nigeria’s state is better appreciated in light of current evidence that even government officials and traditional rulers are not immune.
As a result, some of these officials’ families have relocated outside of the geopolitical zone or outside of the nation. The present wave of violence has instilled in the minds of Nigerians that the government’s security apparatus is incapable of ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
This would have an influence on people’s human security because the circumstance generates dread, while also limiting people’s potential to thrive economically. As a result of the insecurity, the state’s ability to recruit investors is hampered. B. Okolo. Nigeria’s State of Insecurity.Nigeriaworld.com, 2009.
The study attempts to look into insecurity as a danger to national growth.

1.8 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
THREAT
According to Fay (2007), a threat is any event that has the potential to inflict harm to a system in the form of data destruction, disclosure, modification, or denial of service.
This implies that a threat can be expressed verbally or in writing, and it comprises behaviours that entail danger, risk, hazards, and menace and are capable of intimidating an individual.
DEVELOPMENT
According to ROGER (1976), development is a sort of social change in which new ideas are introduced within a social system to provide higher capital incomes and levels of living through more production, improved social organisation, and improved methods of production.
