INSTITUTIONAL STRENGTHENING AND THE EFFICIENCY OF PUBLIC SERVICE DELIVERY.

INTRODUCTION

In recent years, service delivery has been a source of contention in terms of the quality of service provided to the public. Despite several government policy reforms in the public sector, a variety of variables such as conservative bureaucracy, ethnicity, and ethical considerations have been recognised as roadblocks to efficiency.

The Nigerian public service is a major government entity that includes personnel from central administrations, state administrations, the police, and the Nigerian Armed Forces, among others.

Tamuno (2004) defines the public service as “all organisations that exist as part of the federal government system and are responsible for the implementation of policy decisions and the delivery of social services.”

According to Adamolekun (2001), the Nigerian public service consists of the following: the civil service, also known as the core service. It is made up of ministries, extraministerial agencies, and directorates; the public bureaucracy,

which is made up of the enlarged public service, includes the following: services to states and national assemblies; the courts; the armed forces; the police, and other security agencies.Delivery of Public Services

Although the Nigerian public service has deviated significantly from the inherited British system of administration, which is known for prompt and efficient service, many scholars, including Badmus (2012), Igwilo (2012),

and Alalade (2006), argue that this is due to improper learning, a desire for wealth, poverty, and insincerity on the part of the technocrat who collect the instrument of administration from the British.Delivery of Public Services

This has been a significant hindrance to the successful implementation of government programmes, resulting in a diminishing standard of service given by government institutions. In the current situation, Ezeani (2006) observed that the negative consequences on people’s trust in the abilities of the government have become an issue.

Delivery of Public Services Nigerians are well aware of the ugly manifestations of the country’s abysmal grade of service delivery. Many Nigerians have become accustomed to viewing public service as something you have to fight for; that you cannot succeed unless you know someone inside the system (King, 1988).Delivery of Public Services
