INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS CAMP

ABSTRACT

The prospects for those who have already been relocated have never been brighter, since the world has faced multiple natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, and landslides, as well as man-made calamities such as wars, political turmoil, and so on. Following the study of reoccurring conflicts such as Boko-haram insurgencies, ethno-religious crises, and so on, Nigeria has not been left out.

This research aims to provide standard internally displaced person camps with a suitable environment. Case studies, interviews, and internet research with the use of other journals were conducted on various existing and related camps of internally displaced persons within and outside Nigeria to ascertain its basic functional requirements,

and careful analysis of the site location and design factors were conducted to provide a conducive environment to the internally displaced persons camp to be sited at Enugu.

This will not only aid in planning but will also result in an adequate internally displaced persons camp that will provide comfort and delight to the residents of this proposed IDPs camp.

It is critical that schools and skill acquisition programmes be given in this proposed project because the majority of problems faced by displaced people in camps are mostly due to a lack of educational and skill acquisition training.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Over time, the world has seen a number of natural catastrophes, such as floods, hurricanes, and landslides, as well as man-made calamities such as wars. These disasters have displaced an increasing number of people from their homes and means of subsistence, offering a tremendous task to the global community. At the start of 2007,

there were an estimated 24.5 million persons displaced by conflict or persecution in at least 52 nations. As outcasts in their own countries, they frequently have no legal or physical protection and face an unclear future (UNHCR 2007).

By the end of 2014, there were an estimated 38.2 million IDPs globally, the biggest number since 1989 and the first year for which statistics on IDPs are available.

“UNHCR – Global Trends -Forced Displacement in 2014”, UNHCR, 18 June 2015.It is difficult to obtain exact data for IDPs since their population is not constant; IDPs may return home while others escape, and others may return to IDP camps on a regular basis to take advantage of humanitarian aid. (IDMC 2006).

Africa continues to be the continent with the biggest number of internally displaced people. IDMC (internal displacement monitoring centre) observed displaced people in Sub-Saharan African countries in 2011.

There were an estimated 9.7 million IDPs in these nations, accounting for more than one-third of the world’s total internally displaced population. With access to this IDPs camp, it was observed that vital services like as water, housing, healthcare, and education were lacking (IDMC 2011).
