Investigation Into The Disclosure Features In Femi Osofisan’S Midnight Hotel

Chapter one

1.1 Introduction

Language is God’s single unique endowment to humans, distinguishing us from all other species. Though these other creatures have a language, they do not communicate in the same way that humans do.

According to discourse analysts, discourse is a component of language that refers to actual occurrences of communicative action involving language use. Discourse does not exclusively focus on language as an abstract system. It is defined as language communication that involves a transaction between a speaker and a listener in an interpersonal activity, with the form dictated by the social aim.

Discourse can take several forms, including discussion, writing, and speaking. Discourse, for example, deals with natural spoken language such as interviews, conversations, speeches, and commentary. Essays, book chapters, road signs, and notices are all examples of written discourse.

Discourse analysis, on the other hand, is a systematic investigation of discourse that focusses on the constituent units and structures of sentences in specific texts, i.e. grammatical relations such as subject-verb-object, up to the text level.

As previously noted in this section, conversation is an example of discourse. Conversation is typically a conversation between two or more people in which each participant may make multiple utterances and each contribution builds on previous ones, either directly or indirectly.

Conversations, or dialogues, are the building blocks of dramatic literature. This research will examine some of Femi Osofisan’s discussions in Midnight Hotel to demonstrate their relation to culture and religion.

To achieve this, discourse methods such as role-sharing, adjacency pairs, discourse markers, presupposition, implicature, and, most crucially, context will be employed to conduct a cohesive discourse analysis of the dramatic text.

1.2 Aims and Objectives

The primary goal of this study is to explore the discourse aspects of Femi Osofisan’s Midnight Hotel. Its objectives are:

To provide a clear picture of how discourse analysis can be used to interpret texts.

To demonstrate that discussions must adhere to the context of the interaction.

To draw the attentive observer’s attention to the discourse pattern.

To provide a solid understanding of the techniques on which good communication can be based.

1.3 Justification.

To the best of the researcher’s knowledge, Femi Osofisan did not employ Discourse Analysis as a theoretical framework to analyse Midnight Hotel. The researcher discovered only two studies conducted on the planned play. They’re “Satire as a Social Art.”

“A Comparison of Ola Rotimi’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again and Osofisan’s Midnight Hotel.” Obuh, S. (2007) and “The Moral, Social, and Political Decadence in Nigerian Society:

A Case Study of Femi Osofisan’s Midnight Hotel” (Rufus, G., 2013). Neither of these two addresses the precise subject of this research study. This study is therefore acceptable because it tries to analyse the text’s social, political, and cultural implications. It is also expected that the study would add to the body of knowledge on Discourse Analysis, particularly among undergraduates.

1.4 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is focused on studying the discourse elements in Femi Osofisan’s Midnight Hotel. The analysis will focus on Discourse Analysis elements such as discourse subject, participants, turn-taking, adjacency pairs, discourse interruption, and role-sharing.

There are various techniques to discourse analysis, but the researcher will use some pragmatic notions such as context (linguistic, socio-cultural, physical, psychological), assumption, inference, and implicature.

1.5 Research methodology

This study is a discourse analysis of Femi Osofisan’s Midnight Hotel, which falls within the drama genre. The text contains a total of 331 exchanges. A random sampling was used, and every 22nd exchange was chosen, beginning with the second exchange and ending with the 331st exchange.

There are a total of fifteen (15) exchanges. This pick is acceptable since it is neutral and effective in terms of accessibility, thematic coverage, and detailed data analysis.

The data analysis will be supplied in exchange structure format. Each of the fifteen (15) data points will be analysed so that they are easy to read and understand.
