Invitro Determination Of Bacteriocidal Effect Of Garlic On Staphylococcus Aureus
ABSTRACT
The bacteriocidal efficacy of garlic extract on Staphylococcus aureus, which causes cutaneous and urinary tract infections (UTI), was determined in vitro on some female patients. High vaginal swab (HVS) samples were taken at random from a subset of patients who had symptoms comparable to Staphylococcus aureus activity.
The samples were inoculated onto Macconkey agar and nutrient agar and incubated at 370 degrees Celsius for 24-48 hours. Colonies that appeared pinkish in whitish creamy and yellowish on nutrient agar were gram-stained and inspected under a microscope.
Furthermore, biochemical tests were performed to characterise the organism present in each positive sample. 80% of the samples tested positively for Staphylococcal infections. It is more prevalent among people aged 18 to 30.
It is proposed that the government promote public health education on the potency of inexpensive and readily available antibacterial agents such as garlic and its inclusion in daily diets, which will act as a prop drug
particularly among women, to reduce the incidence of S. Aureus, which causes skin and urinary tract injection. Garlic extract has been shown to be a great remedy for the condition.
