Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Background History of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established in 1973 by the Industrial Training Fund. This was in response to the Industrial Training Fund’s mandate under Decree 47 of 1971, which charged it with the responsibility of promoting and encouraging the acquisition of skills in industry and power with the goal of creating a pool of trained indigenous manpower sufficient to meet the needs of the economy.

SIWES has emerged as the primary means of bridging the gap between the theories obtained by students of tertiary institutions in many professional fields and the critical technical and economic progress in Nigeria.

SIWES has made significant contributions over the years to the establishment of a common pool of auditable technical and allied skills for the Nigerian economy, which are required for the country’s industrial development.

1.1 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) aims to achieve the following objectives:

Make the transition from school to the labour market easier while also increasing students’ contacts for future job placements.
Introduce students to work methods and procedures for operating equipment and machinery that may not be available at their institutions.

Provide an opportunity for students at higher education institutions to get industrial skills and experience while studying.

Provide students with opportunities to apply their educational knowledge in real-world circumstances, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Prepare students for the industrial work circumstances that they are likely to encounter after graduation.

SIWES can be used to enlist and deepen the involvement of employers throughout the educational process.
