MANAGEMENT OF ABATTIOR WASTE IN NIGERIA
Abattior waste management is a major challenge in Nigeria. Almost every day in all of Nigeria’s urban and rural markets, animals are slaughtered and the meats are sold to the public for food. Meat waste resulted from slaughtering, dehairing, paunch handling, rendering, trimming, processing, and cleanup procedures.
That is why we shall state that abattoir wastes frequently comprise blood, fat, organic and inorganic substances, as well as salts and chemicals introduced during processing.
In Nigeria, Food and Drug Companies that import and produce animal products must meet the requirements outlined in the appropriate Nigerian Standard for Meat and Meat Products.
Despite the fact that Nigerian laws give butchers and meat importers with rules and regulations that assure high safety and quality standards, as well as a comprehensive mechanism that brings their activities into accordance with the law, enforcing the law appears to be a major issue.
Currently, activities at the Bodjija and Akinyele abattoirs meet only 210 percent of the standards outlined in the primary standard for meat production and none of the storage requirements.
