MAXIMIZING THE VALUE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE LIBRARY ENVIRONMENT

CHAPTER ONE

THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

The library is an important part of the academic institution, providing access to world-class information resources and services that encourage research. As a result, the success of any institution is dependent on its library; the library being the citadel of learning, library services are fundamental. According to the National Education Commission, libraries play an important role in the dissemination of information.

Academic libraries support learning, teaching, and research at their parent institutions; they meet the needs of library users not only for teaching, learning, and research, but also for knowledge conservation. New technologies, particularly electronic technologies, have aided in the radical transformation of library and information science practice. Since the 1950s, academic researchers have used the term I.C.T. Long-established libraries have been compelled to convert to digital libraries as a result of advances in information and communication technology.

The library has evolved from early close-access libraries to today’s hybrid, digital, and virtual libraries. Librarians have evolved from mere bookkeepers concerned with the protection of books against theft, mutilation, and pilferage to information officers, navigators, and cybrarians who promote the use of information material digitally. Librarians can now meet their users’ needs at any time, in any format, and from any location.

With the help of ICT, university libraries can now provide more efficient and effective user-oriented services. Users in traditional libraries must spend more time searching for information, and they must rely on the Librarian or library staff to do so. In this day and age of information and communication technology, the Internet and computers

are used for day-to-day operational services of the library, saving the users’ time while also avoiding duplication of work and making the library service smooth and effective, as stated by the father of library science, R.S Ranganathan, in the 4th law of library and information science “Save the time of the reader.”

For users’ knowledge and library activities, the availability of the right information at the right time and in the right form is critical. Information and communication technology (ICT) advancements have significantly altered library information management methods. ICT is a set of tools and measures that allow for the electronic acquisition, storage, organization, retrieval, and transmission of information.

Computer programs, programming languages, databases, communication networks, analysis and design strategies, artificial intelligence, and other tools are used in ICT. ICT has long exerted dominance over almost all aspects of human activity. Over the last two decades, libraries have become increasingly aware of the transformative impact of advances in information and communication technology on their services. The use of ICT allows for easy and quick access to information.

It allows libraries to broaden the scope of their resources and services while also increasing their significance within the institutions they serve. Over the last few decades, information and communication technology (ICT) has become an essential component of all aspects of the library. Proper ICT implementation in libraries results in better resource sharing and more effective user services.
