MICROBIAL METHANE OXIDATION PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR MITIGATION OF LANDFILL GAS EMISSIONS

Abstract

Anaerobic decomposition of organic waste produces landfill gas, which contains methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and landfills are one of the most significant anthropogenic sources of atmospheric methane. Methanotrophic bacteria in soils or waste materials can oxidise landfill methane by absorbing oxygen from the environment and releasing it into the cover layer.

The methane oxidation process, which is influenced by a variety of environmental conditions, can be used in engineered systems designed to reduce methane emissions.

Methane emissions from landfills can be predicted using mathematical models that take into account methane oxidation. Methane mitigation methods based on microbial methane oxidation processes require additional research and development before they can become commercially feasible and extensively applied.
