MULTI NATIONALS COMPANIES AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES IN THEIR HOST COMMUNITIES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Multinational corporations in the Niger Delta have not abandoned their social obligations in proportion to the negative environmental effects of their exploratory and exploitative activities in the Niger Delta Region. After all genuine and legitimate complaints were ignored by the authorities and these companies, host communities were forced to implement social vice strategies to compel these companies to be responsive and accountable for their actions in the region.
However, Multinational Companies have carried out some Corporate Social Responsibility programs in their host communities, such as scholarship distribution, civic center construction, limited employment opportunities, road construction, hospital construction, and so on, but the aforementioned CSR activities are insignificant in comparison to the negative effects that Multinational Companies’ operations have on the environment.
This paper examined Multinational Corporations and their CSR programs in the Niger Delta Region critically. Method: This paper presents an inductive synthesis as well as a quantitative descriptive review of multinational corporations and their CSR practices in their host communities. Conclusion:
The authorities and all stakeholders in the region should be proactive enough to compel these multinational corporations to be responsive and accountable to the people of the region in order to reduce the negative environmental effects of their operations.
