New Perspectives on Environmental Justice.
INTRODUCTION
Women comprise the vast majority of activists and organisers in grassroots organisations combating environmental issues that endanger poor and people of colour communities.
New Perspectives on Environmental Justice is the first collection of essays to recognise the great contributions women have made in these endeavours.
The authors include numerous instances of environmental justice challenges, including children’s environmental health campaigns, cancer research, AIDS/HIV activism, the Environmental Genome Project, and popular culture, among others.
Each one emphasises gender and sexuality as critical issues in women’s or gay men’s activism, and it applies environmental justice ideals to linked campaigns for sexual justice.
The contributors come from a wide range of activist and scholarly fields, including law, environmental studies, sociology, political science, history, medical anthropology, American studies, English, African and African American studies, women’s studies, and gay and lesbian studies, providing a diverse perspective on gender, sexuality, and activism.
Feminist/womanist impulses shape and sustain global environmental justice movements, therefore recognising gender roles and variations is critical to their success.
