Introduction
1.1 Background of this research
Human resources contribute significantly to the accomplishment of an organization’s goals. No organization can survive without the efforts of its employees; therefore, the management of any organization must acknowledge the human element as the most important factor in sustaining the organization’s growth and long-term survival. Because training bridges the gap between real and expected performance, management must be actively engaged in a workforce training and development program in order to achieve sustainable growth and a steady rise in productivity.
The difference between a progressive and a regressive organization is mostly attributable to human resource or manpower development in the current day. Human resource is a valuable asset that any organization possesses for achieving peak performance. As new concepts are introduced by science and technology to various industries, new products and services are conceived and manufactured. This necessitates a greater emphasis on enhancing the skills, knowledge, and well-being of the labor force, which is essential for turning these concepts into reality and achieving high productivity. Management in businesses and organizations must pay immediate attention to the deployment of effective training and workforce development approaches. Since Nigeria’s independence, training and workforce development have taken on a higher importance in response to the rapid global technology innovation. To address the issue of training and workforce development in the newly independent Nigeria, more institutions of higher education were built. With the establishment of the National Manpower Board in 1963, the government of the newly independent Nigeria took a greater interest in training and workforce development. The Board was tasked with ensuring a sufficient supply of skilled and semi-skilled labor to manufacture the fundamental commodities and services required by the populace in the post-independence era, as well as ushering in a new industrial era for the nation ( F. Fomsi Esther1 and C. Ogoke Charles, 2019) Human resource development and sustainable growth of Nigerian Breweries Plc.
The greater the expansion and diversification of industrial activity, the greater the requirement for training and personnel growth. In businesses such as the brewing industry, where highly skilled and semi-skilled labor is required to manage the complex technologies involved in modern brewing, it is imperative to employ current training and personnel development strategies. This is in accordance with the National Policy on Education of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) regarding training and skills acquisitions, which stipulated that training should help individuals comprehend their environments; acquire useful skills, abilities, and competencies for mental and physical self-development so that they can live and contribute to the development of their society (F. Fomsi Esther and C. Ogoke Charles,2019)
