ABSTRACT

The challenges faced by secretaries in a few chosen banks in Enugu city were the focus of this research. The secretaries of these financial institutions were each given one of 88 questions. Following the analysis, the researcher drew a few conclusions regarding the studies using the sample population. Both the fact that secretaries are not allowed to use their initiative at work and the fact that their salaries are not graded the same as those of other professions are concerns. • Secretaries face bias when it comes to promotions. • Secretaries do not have access to the same training options as other professions. Other probable outcomes of these issues include: low productivity, low-quality work, dissatisfaction with one’s employment, and so on. Some suggestions were provided regarding how these secretaries’ prospects could be improved. Given the aforementioned, it was suggested that the secretary’s role should reflect their skills and experience. To further improve their job happiness, rapport, esprit de corps, and performance on the job, it was suggested that they be given sufficient compensation, job enrichment programs, opportunities for retraining, seminars, conferences, and professional affiliations.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Background of the Study

The services of secretary Segun are essential for every company because of the necessity for effective management and administration (1989). A secretary is someone who is well-versed in organisational and managerial strategies in addition to having strong typing and shorthand abilities.

When interacting with clients, the secretary always uses her sill. Such abilities include, but are not limited to, the following: tact, prudence, politeness, common sense, the capacity to talk in a pleasing manner, and a good memory. Every job has its own unique set of risks, which are collectively known as occupational hazards.

Almost every respectable business organisation has a secretary on staff. It is no secret that secretarial work in Nigeria has matured. All of the country’s polytechnics and a handful of highly esteemed universities now provide secretarial degrees. There appears to be an increasing number of students taking the course, and for those who do, the salary is good.

I know secretaries who are unhappy in their jobs and who have left the field in search of better opportunities, even if it appears like everything is going well for them.

Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify the challenges that secretaries have on the job and the factors that prevent them from being completely satisfied with their work. The goal of this research is to identify these limits so that we may begin to seek solutions to the difficulties.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

A well-run company cannot function without the assistance of its secretarial staff. It is often said that the secretary’s function greatly determines whether an organisation succeeds or fails in reaching its goals. The secretarial profession is highly desirable and financially rewarding in today’s world.

A record number of people have entered the field as a result of this. Despite the rewarding nature of the career, secretaries may feel pressured to have a negative outlook on their work or perhaps consider leaving the field altogether due to unnamed problems.

In spite of the generous compensation that secretaries often receive, this research seeks to identify the challenges that keep them from staying in the field. We will also look for ways to fix these issues and provide you some suggestions on how to do it.

1.3 Purpose Of The Study

In this research, we aim to

i. To learn about the challenges faced by secretaries at a few representative businesses in Enugu city

ii) Determine how these issues would most likely impact the secretary’s productivity on the job

iii) To provide ideas and proposals to enhance secretaries’ lot in life.

1.4 Research Questions

Is it true that secretaries at some companies in Enugu city have issues on the job?

Does their official performance suffer as a result of these issues?

III. Exactly what are these issues?

4. What are the most probable ways that these issues can be resolved?

1.5 The significance Of The Study

The results of this study are expected to have far-reaching positive effects on secretaries, their employers, and the company overall. The primary goal of this research is to help secretaries reflect on the challenges they face on the job, identify the factors that contribute to their pessimism, and then provide solutions that will inspire their employers to raise productivity.

The study will also help managers at those companies find out how to improve the secretaries’ chances of success. Also, the secretaries will benefit from the study as, if implemented, the study’s suggestions will boost their standing and position inside the organisation.

Even though they are aware of the challenges, it will encourage secretaries in Nigeria to fully embrace their vocation. At last, the study will give the most recent data on the secretarial field.

16.4 Limitations of the Study

Secretaries in a few chosen businesses in Enugu city are the only ones whose records will be included in this study. Union Bank of Nigeria PLC, Afribank of Nigeria PLC, First Bank of Nigeria PLC, and United Bank for Africa (UBA) PLC are all located in Enugu.
