ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES IN NIGERIA

THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES IN NIGERIA
This project was designed to investigate the significance of effective service marketing in the Nigerian financial industry.

In the past, marketing was associated with services in industries such as banking; but, in recent years, marketing activities in the banking industries have gained prominence and attracted more attention. The cause for this phenomena is simple: rivalry in banks, which market their activities and solicit support by providing excellent services.

An attempt was made in the empirical research of financial services marketing to calculate the average time spent by clients in the bank for any basic transaction and to find any sources of delay.

The study is divided into four chapters, with the first focusing on the research background, objectives, significance and limitations, and definition terminology.

The second chapter is a review of the literature, the third is about research design and methodology, and the fourth is on the findings.

Conclusion and recommendations
INTRODUCTION TO CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The history of modern co-operative society in Nigeria begins in 1933, when the Nigerian government arranged for an inspection to be carried out by M.C.F Strickland, a cooperating expert, who investigated the possibility of introducing a co-operative system into Nigeria for three months, from December 1933 to March 1934.

Mr. Jlriok – land vigorously advocated for the establishment of co-operatives into Niger, and his report, which was delivered in April 1934, served as the foundation for the introduction of modern co-operation into Nigeria. Mr. Strickland also proposed an ordinance and regulations.

His report was accepted and immediately implemented; a co-operative was created in Mr. E.F.G Haig’s name, he was appointed, and he was transferred overseas for training. Mr. Haig researched and adapted Indian cooperative law for use in Nigeria.

Many cooperatives had been created by 1934. G. Bedun near Ibada was the first co-operative society to be registered in 1937 by late Chief Akinpene Obisesan, who is recognised as the father of Gbedum. Following the formation of the Co-operative Produces Marketing Society Limited, many co-operatives were founded around the country.

A co-operative is an association of people who share common interests, social and economic values, and objectives through a jointly owned and democratically run firm. A co-operative is a group of people who pool their resources to form a business.

The interests of the members must take precedence over those of capital. The social element is the group of people.

Many co-operatives were formed in the early 1980s in order to allow members to save their money and also with the goal of borrowing loans from the society. A lot of progress was gained by members because of the low rate of interest. It also encouraged members to borrow money from other organisations.

Co-operatives, on the other hand, have played an important role in the socioeconomic development and expansion of society today. This will raise the ovation to a higher level, ensuring that people and organisations do not run out of funds. The country will be pushed to a higher industrial and technological level.
