Patient Care Service Delivery System Using Timed Coloured Petri Nets.

ABSTRACT

Patient care service delivery in hospitals is an important component that influences the level of quality service. The majority of existing Patient Care Service Delivery System models described in the literature were designed to improve emergency department service using various performance indicators.

However, the purpose of this study was to simulate a patient care service delivery system that includes emergency, inpatient, and outpatient cases using Timed Coloured Petri Nets.

In constructing a Timed Coloured Petri Nets (TCPN) model for a patient care service delivery system, the medical professionals (nurses) and three types of patients (emergency, inpatient, and outpatient) attending the Oyo State General Hospital in Fiditi were employed as a case study.

The designed Patient Care Service Delivery System (TCPN) model is divided into three sections. The first segment depicted the three types of patients and their current conditions.

The second component depicted the Nursing station and how patients were administered by the available nurse(s), while the third piece abstracted the nurse-patient interaction.

The created TCPN model was simulated with CPN tools. The validation of the created TCPN model was investigated by doing a statistical analysis of the simulated and observed average waiting times and queue lengths for the patients under consideration.

The simulation results of the created TCPN model revealed that patient average waiting durations were 14.5208, 2.9583, 0.9792, and 0.50000 minutes, with patient queue lengths of 27, 6, 5, and 1 as administered by 1, 2, 3, and 4 nurses, respectively.

At the 5% level, there was no statistically significant difference between the simulated and observed average waiting times or queue lengths for the patients under consideration.

In conclusion, our research was successful in developing a TCPN model for investigating a patient care service delivery system. Furthermore, the created Timed Coloured Petri Nets model, through its simulation, may aid in estimating the nurse-patient ratio required for effective patient care service delivery in a certain medical centre.
