Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study.

The globe is currently celebrating advancements in communication technology that have expanded the reach of communication via information and communication technologies (ICT) (Asemah, Okpanachi, and Edegoh, 2013).

Modern communication technology has undoubtedly transformed the world into a “Global Village” (Osharive, 2015). It helps people become more aware, enlightened, and up to date on global issues. Technology introduces humans to a better method of doing things.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a broad phrase that refers to a variety of communication devices such as computers, mobile phones, and satellite communication.

Information and communication technology is a tool that helps people communicate more effectively. According to Okwuchukwu (2015), information and communication technology has enabled unrestricted access to information in practically every field of human endeavour. Issa, Uzuegbu, and Nwosu (2014) defined ICT as the collection of computers, telecommunications devices, multimedia resources, and other related technologies used in the overall process of information management and dissemination.

According to Talukder, Alam, and Apu (2015), educational institutions have adopted ICT-based teaching methods and are offering ICT-related academic programmes, thereby equipping students with the skills of using various smart devices and the internet to access information, which is critical in academia.

According to Ntui (2014), ICT is recognised as a crucial instrument for leveraging the economy and society, hence acquiring basic ICT skills and concepts has become a major component of education, alongside reading, writing, and numeracy. ICT skills are requirements for information literacy and lifelong learning.

Hasnain, Nasreen, and Ijaz (2015) describe social media as a rapidly developing phenomenon. Social media is the 21st century’s fastest growing web application, relying on computer, mobile, and web-based technology to create highly interactive platforms that allow people to share, co-create, discuss, and alter user-generated content.

It brings about significant and widespread shift in interpersonal communication. According to Al-Rahmi and Othman (2013), the driving factors for social media adoption are the increasing availability, convenience, usefulness, and adaptability of social technologies.
