PATTERNS OF INSTAGRAM USAGE AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study looks at the Instagram usage patterns of undergraduate students at Delta State University, Abraka. The study was based on the Uses and satisfaction hypothesis, which is concerned with what people get from utilising a medium and how they use it. The survey method was used to conduct the research, with a sample size of 200 students taken from the Arts, Social Sciences, Science, and Education faculties.

The respondents returned 200 of the administered questionnaires, and the data was collected, compiled, and analysed using tables and percentages. According to the report, the most common trend of Instagram usage among students is creating new acquaintances.

Furthermore, the study found that the student spends modest amounts of time on Instagram, lessening their level of addiction to the platform. The survey also found that the student does not use much of Delsu’s internet service to access Instagram.

It was suggested that students use the Instagram network more as a supplement to classroom instruction rather than only for meeting new friends and other activities.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background for the study

Instagram is a photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking website that allows users to upload photos and videos to their social media platform (Frommer, 2010).

He went on to say that Instagram, a mobile social media platform, is a photo-sharing application and service that allows users to upload photographs and videos publicly or privately.

According to Stec (2015), Instagram is a photo-sharing smartphone application that allows users to capture photos, apply filters to them, and publish them on both the platform and other platforms.

In other words, Instagram is a platform for sharing photographs, videos, audios, and other content with the public. He claimed that Instagram, a mobile photo and video capture and sharing service, has quickly risen as a new media in the spotlight in recent years.

According to Wagner (2015), Instagram, the world’s fastest growing social media network, provides users with an instantaneous way to capture and share their moments with friends via a succession of (filter modified) photos and videos.

According to Dimico, Millen, and Duggan (2008), Instagram has attracted over 800 million active users since its launch in October 2010 as a free mobile application for the iPhone operating system (IOS), with over 95 million photos uploaded by users per day and more than 40 billion photos shared thus far.

In 2012, Facebook paid around $1 billion for Instagram (Rusli). Instagram’s phenomenal success demonstrates that photographs and videos have emerged as the primary drivers of online social change (Rainie, Brenner, and Purcell, 2012).

According to Joseph Barker (2013), the benefits of using Instagram among Nigerian students include: building interpersonal relationships, education, individual identity and self-expression, social interaction/web engagement, and informal knowledge and skill acquisition.

According to the Instagram user demographic in Nigeria (2017), Nigeria has 3.6 million Instagram users. Only 40% of Instagrammers in Nigeria are female, and more than 80% are between the ages of 18 and 44, indicating young. Instagram has the highest amount of users between the ages of 18 and 29, accounting for around 55% of internet adults who use the platform.

Young adults not only use Instagram, but they also utilise it to express themselves and explore new things (Fitzsimmon, 2017). Teens and adults aged 20 and up spend less time on Facebook and more time on social media platforms such as Instagram (Melanie Shreffler of smarty pants, a youth and family research firm).

Instagram attracts a younger, more varied readership than other social networks. Instagram users are substantially younger than Facebook users, therefore each incoming undergraduate student brings a pool of Instagram users (Association of College and Research Libraries, Vol. 78, No. 8, 2013).

Instagram is the most popular social networking site among undergraduate students (Jasmine, 2016). Research undertaken by numerous researchers, such as Sheldon and Byrant (2016), Michikyan (2015), Heffner (2016), Manovich (2013), Silva (2013), and others, has indicated that the majority of undergraduate students who use Instagram have worse GPAs than students with higher GPAs.

However, students who are struggling in college and are not fully engaged in their studies are more likely to resort to Instagram for distraction and enjoyment, or even to cope with their problems.

Instagram allows students to interact with other students, which can be highly useful for discussing class subjects and networking (Heffner, 2016). According to Ahn (2011), undergraduate students can benefit from using Instagram to engage with professors and other course members.

According to Ahn’s research on Instagram usage, one of the benefits of Instagram as a social media network is social connectivity and cognitive ability. According to Ikehi (2014), the most active Instagram users in the academic system are youngsters aged 18 to 29, with the majority of them being students in Nigeria.

Another study conducted by Ahn (2011) discovered that Nigerian young, particularly students, spend a significant portion of their everyday lives communicating on Instagram. Instagram is rapidly being utilised by students, supporting a virtual learning environment and widening learning among them (Hussain, 2005).

Another study by Armstrong and Franklin (2008) found that undergraduate students utilise Instagram in a variety of ways to enhance and strengthen their learning through collaborative activities. They went on to say that undergraduate students’ increasing use of Instagram appears to be changing the way they learn.
