PEACE IN THE NIGER DELTA IMPACT OF AMNESTY PROGRAMME.
ABSTRACT
The paper examined the federal government’s amnesty program and the peace it brought to Nigeria’s Niger Delta. Amnesty for ex-military combatants was proclaimed in the region prior to this vicious cycle of violence, which resulted in the grinding of economic activity.
The oil infrastructure in the region was destroyed as a result of the regional crises. Thus, oil and gas production dramatically decreased, which had a significant impact on economic growth. But in 2009, the Federal government announced an Amnesty program, which resulted in a return to pre-crisis levels of 2.6 million pbd in oil and gas production.
However, the focus of this paper is to examine whether the current peace in the region is a lasting peace that can withstand time. Amnesty, Peace, Crisis, DDR, Niger Delta, Militant, Militia are some of the keywords.
