PERCEIVED EFFECT OF SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES ON HEALTH STATUS OF COMMUNITY RESIDENTS
ABSTRACT
The study looked at how people of the Igando Local Government Area viewed the effects of solid waste disposal procedures on their health. Four (4) Local Community Development Areas. Ifeoluwa, Banjo, Feyintola, & Oduduwa The study was conducted using a descriptive research method. The study’s population consisted of 4,640 participants aged 18-50 and over (male and female) from Igando Local Government Area in Lagos state.
The sample size consisted of 464 people aged 18-50 and over who live in four Igando settlements. The data was collected using a validated questionnaire with 20 items. The descriptive survey method was utilised in the investigation.
Data was analysed using percentage descriptive statistics, a frequency table, mean standard deviation, and Pearson product moment correlation. The findings reveal that inappropriate solid waste disposal practices can lead to disease outbreaks and other risks.
Respondents with a grand mean of 3.1940 and ages ranging from 18 to 50 years and older agreed that proper solid waste management can promote healthier living.
According to these figures, the vast majority of Igando Local Government Area citizens are well aware of the implications of improper waste disposal. The vast majority of responders with great wealth 2.7823 agreed that the open dump method of solid waste disposal is not environmentally beneficial, implying that open dumps can cause land, water, and air pollution, all of which have a significant influence on inhabitants’ health.
Finally, people’s attitudes towards trash management can be improved if the government and local waste management organisations conduct periodic campaigns and other forms of sensitisation. Furthermore, all hands must be on deck to ensure appropriate trash management in the best interests of the public.
The recommendations are as follows.
– Byelaws should be implemented.
– A public enlightenment program should be implemented.
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
Solid waste disposal is a problem that affects both cities and countryside. Everyone has the potential to generate waste, which contributes to the problem. Generating garbage is one thing; the sort of waste generated is another, and how the generated waste is managed or disposed of is a completely separate matter.
More often than not, the rate at which solid waste is generated exceeds the capacity to manage it appropriately. Waste is generated by and from various sectors, including home, commercial, and industrial, and in many cases, waste management responsibility has been delegated to the government or administrative authorities.
There is a growing understanding that the immediate stakeholders in the issue of solid waste (waste generators), in this case the authorities, are dealing with a problem that has far-reaching environmental and human health consequences.
Solid waste is municipal trash generated by households, businesses, institutions, and industries, but it does not include excreta unless it is mixed with it. It is important to highlight, however, that in many underdeveloped nations, distinguishing between excreta and solid waste can be difficult, if not impossible. In many cases, solid waste mixed with excreta poses a health risk to humans and animals. Levine and Coed (2004).
Navarro (2008) argued that waste output increases not only because people multiply and thus the area allocated to each person becomes smaller, but also because the demand per person is constant.
