POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examines Nigeria’s political instability and economic development from 2001 to 2015, with a focus on Jos North Local Government Area. The study is to investigate the influence of political insecurity on the socioeconomic growth of Jos North LGA. The study’s main objectives are

(1) to identify the factors responsible for the state’s economic backwardness

(2) to determine if there are negative setbacks to the affected persons living in the study area

(3) to bring out the crises and devise means to resolve them

(4) to identify and analyse the mechanism that can be used to handle future conflicts in the area. In doing so, the study draws on historical sources, both primary and secondary, and employs a multi-method/interdisciplinary approach to data collection. According to the findings of the study, the outcome of the violence in Plateau State has a long historical precedent.

The study also finds that the political instability that gripped the study area from 2001 to 2015 conflicts in the State provided certain hurdles to Nigeria’s sustainable development. T

he report concludes that the government should put the suggestions of the numerous panels into action in order to foster peace, inclusion, equity, and justice for the benefit of the state’s people.

CHAPITRE ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1.1.1 Introduction

The goal of this research is to rebuild Nigeria’s political instability and economic development from 2001 to 2015, using Jos North Local Government as a case study. This study will go into the period preceding our period of study in order for us to see a clear image of society prior to our period,

making it easier for us to notice the changes that occurred and evaluate, analyse, and interpret them one by one. The choice of Jos North Local Government Area as a case study is based only on the homogeneity of its population and the role this population has played in the economic development of the area, Plateau, and Nigeria in general.

1.2 Statement of the Research Problem

The researcher aims to explain how political instability serves as a precursor to acts that block the State and Local Government’s aspirations for economic development. As a result, the following research issues are proposed for investigation and empirical validation in order to actualize the aforesaid.

Are the 2001 crises in Jos North to blame for the ensuing crisis that overtook the state between 2001 and 2015?

Did the Jos North crisis from 2001 to 2015 harm the state’s economic development?

Is there any detrimental impact on the affected people in the state, particularly in Jos North Local Government?

What options exist for resolving the political crisis?

How has the crisis affected religious coexistence on the Plateau, and are there measures to improve social coexistence between opposing groups?

1.3 Aims and Objectives of The Study

The primary goal of this study is to investigate the influence of political instability on economic development in Nigeria, with a focus on Jos North Local Government. Other goals include:

To determine who or what is to blame for the state’s 2001 predicament.

To investigate the factors that contributed to the state’s economic backwardness between 2001 and 2015.

To determine whether there is any detrimental impact on the affected residents of Jos North Local Government.

To highlight the crisis’s sociopolitical and theological implications, as well as potential solutions.

Identify and analyse mechanisms for dealing with future conflicts.

1.4 Significance of the Research

The study’s relevance is to investigate the root causes of the Jos conflict, and the research will assist the government in developing the necessary framework to ensure long-term peace in Jos North and the Plateau as a whole.

The research would also assist Nigerian elites and the government in making a first step towards development by resolving security, ethnic, and political or religious crises in Jos North Local Government.

The findings will be very useful to students and professors in terms of how to do more research in the area.

Finally, the research would assist the government in resolving some issues that may arise during Nigeria’s development.

1.5 Scope and Limitations of The Study

Although the problem of political instability is widely acknowledged. The scope of this particular work would be limited to Jos North of Plateau State in Nigeria, and the time frame of study should be limited to 2001 – 2015,

the year of the occurrence of the major conflict in Jos city, with the study ending in 2015 due to political changes that occurred not only in the area but also throughout Nigeria.

To justify the 2015, the blame for the violence was largely placed on the People Democratic Party (P.D.P) Government, which lost the 2015 general election to the All Progressive Congress (A.P.C) and caused the people of the metropolis to see the change as a long-term solution to their problems,

particularly the Hausa, who felt marginalised by the previous government. This argument gained traction since Hon. Dayyabu Garga was appointed to an important post in the Plateau State Government for the first time since 1999, as commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

1.6 Research Methodology

It is vital to realise that many materials will be employed in historical research. For historical reconstruction, two main sources will be employed in this study: primary and secondary sources.

The first category of sources to be used in this research included oral interviews, in which relevant information was obtained by interviewing numerous individuals.

Published and unpublished materials were also used during the course of this research, which included various academic projects, journals, files, newspapers, articles, pamphlets, and other materials found relevant within our area of study.

1.7 Justification for the Research

Scholars have written extensively on the history of the problem in Plateau State and the city of Jos. However, little is known about the Jos North Local Government Area. This study aims to reconstruct the history of the problem in Jos North Local Government Area.

This is so that we can understand how the crisis altered the socio-political, economic, and demographic settings of the people in the area. The research will also provide recommendations to avoid such occurrences.
