POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND VOTING BEHAVIOUR (A CASE STUDY OF SOKOTO STATE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS)
Abstract
The 2019 General Election is yet another milestone and watershed in Nigeria’s efforts to democratize. General Elections have been held successfully six times in a row in the Fourth Republic, which is unprecedented in the country’s history.
This paper looked into the major issues, challenges, successes, and lessons learned from the election. It is noteworthy that elections in Nigeria have remained a warlike affair for over fifty (50) years, and the phenomenon appears to be ongoing despite the current Republic’s long experience with democratic practice. The study analyzed data from both primary and secondary sources.
The primary sources include participant observation, data from the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and reports from observers and civil society organizations who directly participated in the election. Books, journals, the internet, and other existing literature on the subject of study are examples of secondary sources.
The collected data was analyzed and discussed using a qualitative approach method in which themes and sub-themes were identified and discussed analytically. The research discovered that the 2019 General Election was heralded with several issues, various challenges, and some level of success,
and that there are lessons to be learned from the process for the country’s future General Elections’ conduct. The work suggests, among other things, that for a better General Election in the future in the country, some observed avoidable mistakes be addressed immediately and that the success component be strengthened to ensure effectiveness.
