TechniquesThe study utilised data from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) conducted in 2003, 2008, and 2013. The objective was to investigate the correlation between ethnicity
and various aspects of youth sexual reproductive health, specifically age at sexual debut, engagement in multiple sexual partners (MSP), and condom usage during the most recent sexual activity.
The analysis focused on a sample of 6304 females and 1549 males who reported being sexually active within the four weeks prior to the survey. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was employed for multivariate analysis
to identify the risk factors associated with early sexual activity among individuals aged 15-24. Condom use at the most recent sexual activity and multiple sexual partners (MSP) were predicted using logistic regression.
The median age of initiation of sexual activity was 16 for females and 17 for males. In their most recent sexual activity, 43% of male adolescents utilised condoms, while just 16% of females did so. Additionally, a greater proportion of boys (81%) reported having several sexual partners compared to females (35%).
The Hausa/Fulani females aged 15-19 had a significantly higher likelihood of engaging in first sexual intercourse, while Yoruba males had a higher probability of experiencing their first sexual encounter.
This study presents more data supporting the implementation of social, cultural, and gender-specific strategies to encourage the adoption of safe sexual practices among young people in Nigeria, with the aim of preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
