POLLUTION STATUS OF THE URBAN SECTION OF DELIMI RIVER: HYDROLOGICAL SOCIETY
Abstract
River contamination in urban areas is a widespread concern throughout Nigeria. This study looks at the physiochemical and biological properties of the river Delimi in the Jos urban area.
The particular aims were to identify the primary activities that contribute to pollution and to assess pollution levels at various activity positions and times of year.
Eight water samples were obtained from eight points along the river, ranging from the river’s intake point to its outflow point. The water analysis results were compared to WHO and NAFDAC water quality criteria for consumption and irrigation.
The findings indicate that the concentrations of pH, electrical conductivity, total soluble solid, hydrocarbon, lead iron, and BOD surpass WHO and NAFDAC guidelines. All eight sample locations had values for cobalt, chromium, nickel, potassium, sodium, and manganese that are less than the contamination level.
E.coli drancuculum larvae, hydra-organisms, small fish, small snails’ paramecium, and spirogyra were all found in substantial amounts in the water samples. To improve water quality, polluting activities along the river’s course must be controlled or prevented.
