Positive Parent-Adolescent Relationship
INTRODUCTION
Adolescence is a challenging time for both the child and the parent. As children struggle to grasp and cope with the physical, cognitive, psychological, and social changes they are experiencing, parents may feel as if their relationship has been flipped upside down.
Their child has suddenly become less ready to follow their advise, more independent, argumentative, and hesitant to believe that a parent has even the faintest idea what they are going through.
Given these changes, parents may be concerned that their adolescent children have come to regard their connection less, and that they have lost significant control over the course of their children’s life. Research indicates otherwise.
A national poll of teenagers in the United States found that the majority of adolescents respect, admire, and like their parents, and they like spending time with them.
The evidence is encouraging. Quality parent-child connections are linked to a number of favourable outcomes among teenagers, according to studies conducted in the United States and other countries.
Adolescence complicates parent-child interactions. Children go through significant developmental changes during these years. For example:1 · They have rapid physical development. Changes in height and weight are rather common.
Puberty causes the development of various secondary sexual traits. Brain growth continues until late adolescence. Adolescents often feel uneasy, compare their appearance to others, worry about their development rate, and have sex-related issues. Adolescents gain superior reasoning and abstract thinking skills.
They develop the ability to reflect on how they feel and how others perceive them. They are far more self-conscious and assume that everyone is watching them and cares about what they do and think.
