Prevalence of Hard Drug use among youths

Abstract

This study focused on the prevalence of hard drug usage among youths in Anambra East LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria. The study’s overall population is 200 inhabitants of Anambra East. The researcher employed questionnaires to collect data.

The descriptive survey research design was used for this investigation. The survey used a total of 133 respondents, including students, teenagers, men and women. The acquired data was organised into tables and analysed using simple percentages and frequencies.

Chapter one

Introduction

Background of the study.
The frequency of health-risky behaviours connected with adolescent illicit drug use is receiving increasing international attention (Garvin et al., 2006). Unfortunately, adolescents and teens may underestimate the negative consequences of unhealthy lifestyles (McMaster and Keshav, 1994).

These unpleasant youth activities are widespread in Nigeria and throughout Africa, causing great worry among the authorities and the general population (Greene, 1980). Drug misuse remains a major health issue around the world (UNODC, 2005).

According to Haladu (2003), drug abuse is the excessive and chronic self-administration of a substance without respect for medically or culturally acceptable patterns.

The use of medicines for social rather than medical purposes has been extensively documented. The society regularly condemns what it considers to be the negative repercussions of drug usage. Almost every deviant act in the community is directly or indirectly linked to drug usage.

According to the United Nations’ 2016 World Drug Report, one in every 20 persons, or a quarter of a billion people aged 15 to 64, consumed at least one psychoactive drug in 2014. More than 29 million people worldwide suffer from drug-related diseases. Several studies have found that young people are damaging their lives by abusing drugs.

In comparison to other third-world countries, Nigeria has one of the highest rates of harmful drug use, including alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, benzodiazepines, cocaine, and opioids. A study of the literature reveals a consistent increase in the incidence of drug use and its associated repercussions over the previous three decades.

Drug traffickers utilise Nigeria as a conduit to carry narcotics from South East Asia (the Golden Triangle) and South America (Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil) to Europe and North America, resulting in the availability of almost all sorts of psychoactive substances on the streets.

Adolescents are typically the first to experiment with illicit drugs. Surveys in the United Kingdom show that 5±20% of schoolchildren use drugs, with 2±5% using them weekly and a peak prevalence at 14±16 years old (2). Illicit narcotics include heroin, cocaine, cannabis, opium, and so on.

Drugs are said to be abused when they are used for objectives other than treating, preventing, or diagnosing diseases. Cigarette smoking is a licit drug that many people abuse. The main effect of smoking cigarettes is nicotine, which causes lung cancer, gangrene, chest discomfort, and death.

Alcoholism is also defined medically as a disease induced by continuous, excessive drinking, which leads to alcohol dependence. Based on this background, the researcher wishes to explore the incidence of hard drug usage among youths in Anambra East LGA.

Statement of the Problem

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in drug misuse and concomitant antisocial behaviour. This has become a source of concern for the government, parents, teachers, non-governmental organisations, and other relevant entities.

It is more widespread than parents realise. Parents fail to recognise the level of drug usage, and as a result, some young people believe they can use drugs freely.

The objectives of the study

The aims of the study are:

To understand the impact of hard drugs on the youth of Anambra East LGA.

To determine the purpose of the hard drug used by youth in Anambra East LGA.

Research hypotheses aimed at determining the effects of heavy drug use among children.

To ensure the study’s success, the researcher developed the following research hypotheses:

H0: There is no effect of hard drugs among youth in Anambra East LGA.

H1: Hard drugs have an effect on youth in Anambra East LGA.

H02: There are no effects of using heavy drugs among teenagers.

H2: There are consequences to using heavy drugs among youth.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The outcomes of the study are expected to be beneficial to the children once completed. The study will help to address the causes and propose solutions to teenage drug usage.

The study will also be very useful to academics who plan to conduct research on similar themes because it will act as a guide. Finally, the study will be extremely valuable to academics, lecturers, teachers, students, and the general public.

Scope and limitations of the study

The study’s focus is the prevalence of hard drug usage among youths in Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. The researcher faces various constraints that limit the scope of the investigation;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher has insufficient research material, which limits the investigation.

b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.

1.7 Definition of Terms

DANGER: Danger is a broad term that refers to the risk of hurt or negative repercussions, whether they are immediate and certain or distant and uncertain: to be in danger of death.

Hazard implies a threat that. Peril typically signifies serious and imminent danger. The passengers of the disabled ship were in serious danger.

DRUG ABUSE: Substance abuse, often known as drug abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the person consumes the substance in quantities or techniques that are detrimental to themselves or others. It is a type of substance-related disorder.

YOUTH: Youth is defined as the period of life when one is young, however it is frequently used to refer to the period between childhood and adulthood. It is also defined as “the appearance, freshness, vigour, spirit, etc., characteristic of one who is young”

Prevalence is the fact or condition of being widespread; commonness.

1.8 Organisation of the Study

This research study is organised into five chapters for simple understanding, as follows:

The first chapter is concerned with the introduction, which includes the (overview of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms, and the study’s historical context.

The second chapter is on the theoretical framework that underpins the study, as well as a review of relevant literature. Chapter three discusses the research design and technique used in the study.

Chapter four focusses on data gathering, analysis, and presenting of findings. Chapter 5 provides a summary, conclusion, and suggestions from the study.
