Problems And Effect Of Old Age

ABSTRACT

The study sought to uncover the difficulties and impacts of old age in Enugu State’s Udi Local Government Area. The research questions shaped the study. The study included 600 male and female participants of various ages.

A questionnaire was utilised to collect data. The collected data was examined using the mean and standard deviation. As a result, the findings revealed that the elderly are vulnerable to a variety of ailments and diseases. Based on the findings, recommendations were offered.

To complete the job, the researchers conducted oral interviews and created questionnaire copies based on means and standard deviations.

Investigations show that the causes of geriatric diseases range from remote to immediate. Poor family living arrangements, such as the formation of polygamous families, having so many children, and not being able to provide them with a proper upbringing at a period convenient to the parents are among the remote reasons.

However, it was recognised that some causes are directly controlled by nature. Causes of childlessness include the death of a spouse or children, as well as many types of family disputes.

Aside from the aforementioned causes, other investigations indicated that the immediate causes include loneliness, bad health and lack of medical treatment, a lack of finances, unsuitable living accommodations, and a variety of other factors.

It is hoped that by identifying these concerns of the elderly, our current youngsters would improve on the past, and that in the future, there will be fewer of these types of problems in our society.

Chapter one

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Obviously, living a long life is a gift from God Almighty; yet, the ambition and motivation of the majority of people in Enugu State, particularly in the Udi Local Government Area, and throughout the country, is to be strong and healthy.

However, senior individuals have a moment in life where they can let go of negative attitudes that they developed when they were younger.

In Igbo culture, it is thought that someone with grey hairs on their heads ulters nothing. This signifies that persons with grey hairs on their heads have met natural issues, and whatever they have experienced must be used to judge them appropriately by their ancestors.

In Nigeria as a whole, this notion is manifested by legal practitioners such as lawyers, judges, and magistrates who wear grey-haired wigs to demonstrate their honesty and fairness.

This suggests that legal practitioners are honest in carrying out their duty and equally play justice based on the evidence presented in court of law.

However, some people dislike the concept of growing old due to the troubles that come with it. It is a recognised observation that as people age, they experience a deterioration in most bodily functions such as nerve fibre conductivity, visual recognition, and sensitivity to light and sound, to name a few.

Rowan (1997) stated that “one of the most depressing facts that comes out of any examination of the psychological effects of ageing is that it is all downward path.”

A is regarded as old age. Even in Western societies, there is no consensus on what constitutes old age.

Epidemologists (1985) defined old age as the current state of sickness and mortality, implying that as time passes in the life of any human, there is a process of decline in good health that culminates in death.

Chambers Encyclopaedia (1997) defines ageing as the progression of diverse tissues, organ systems, and body fluids in response to various causes at varying rates in different people.

It goes on to describe it as a phase in a person’s life when degeneration occurs, implying that the individual progresses from a condition of physical goodness to a lower state, which is typical in life.

According to several writers, there is no agreed-upon age at which one can be considered elderly.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica (1991), the appropriate years of old age are between the ages of four and sixty-five.

Also, for the same purposes, the people and government of Enugu State consider the age of sixty-five as the onset of old age. Civil servants must retire at this age and are then entitled to retirement benefits and pensions.

According to the study’s theme, home management can be defined as the right management of a domestic home by taking suitable care of giving and disclosing the desirable wants of the family in partnership with the wife and children.

This could be considered attitudinal management, behavioural management, self-control, and hence overall house management. This means that any home without proper administration is bound to disperse.

There will be no peace and harmony in such a home, and all of the aforementioned factors promote separation and divorce of marriage or marital engagement.

Statement of the Problem

Old age, which is viewed as the decreasing portion of one’s life duration in many ways and/or forms, presents numerous life obstacles. This ageing period/later years represent a time of significant danger for issues in one’s life.

Preparing for old age is a task that most people are unable to complete because they do not save or invest enough for their future living expenses. Cullen (2000) claimed that various difficulties are related with old age, which affects the physical well-being of a greater group of people, both men and women.

Hnrlock (1987) identified the following diseases and physical disabilities among the elderly: circulatory disturbances, metabolic disorders of the joints, heart diseases, recheumatism, arthritis, vision, and so on.

In addition to the physical and psychological problems of the elderly listed above, the following problems are frequent in the area where the researchers conducted their study: loneliness, problems with living accomodation, and problems created by young.

Given these issues, the purpose of this study is to identify the elements that contribute to problems and the consequences of old age in house management in Enugu State’s Udi Local Government Area.

The purpose of the study

The primary goal of this research is to determine the extent to which the problems of the elderly, namely in the Udi Local Government Area, may be solved.

This is because the elderly are highly valued in society, as they are regarded as the stewards of tradition and culture. They play an important role in keeping peace and order by resolving minor disagreements outside of the courtroom, which is what the study aims.

1. Identifying the causes of problems among the elderly and making recommendations for how to solve them.

2. To do research on the benefits of ageing in order to eliminate the idea of repressing ageing from people’s minds.

3. Determine means to convey to the public’s attention a standard living pattern that can make the days of elderly people the healthiest possible, as well as psychological depressions that can accompany ageing.

4. To develop greater human relationships with the elderly and other members of the community in order to make life more joyful for them.

5. Determine what other problems prevent the sustainability of elderly persons in the case study location.

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the elderly in Udi Local Government Area, as well as Enugu State as a whole. The study will provide a solid foundation of understanding for people to adopt attitudes of tolerance, endurance, and sympathy.

In the face of age-related issues. The younger generation in our society, those who have not yet built their own homes, will profit from becoming aware of their forefathers’ shortcomings in order to avoid them.

It will assist to care for the elderly, who are the stewards of our traditions and culture. Their basic requirements must be met sufficiently in order for them to live longer lives.

Research Questions

The researchers generated specific questions, which we hope will provide solutions to the challenges. They are as follows.

(1) To what extent do polygamous families affect the life of the elderly in your council area?

(2) Are some children dependent on the income of their elderly parents?

(3) Are there any elements that often influence the life expectancy of elderly individuals in your council area?

(4) Does the elderly people’s income (if any) cover the cost of maintaining and managing their residences.

(5) Does a good relationship between the younger generation and the semi-old folks improve their standard of living?

Limitations of the Study

Because of the limited time available to conduct this study, the research was limited to a single local government region. The expense of supplies due to the country’s present inflation also hampered our ability to work within this scope.

Scope of the Study

It does not fully address all aspects of house management in the council region. It focusses solely on the issues and effects of elderly persons in home management in Enugu State’s Udi Local Government Council. It also addresses the appropriate care that people should provide to the elderly, particularly those who have reached the age of reason.
