ABSTRACT
The theme of this article is the problems and potential of student hostile accommodation in IMT. The purpose of selecting this topic is to bring to light the issues that students confront at IMT Hostels. These issues bring a negative name to the school,
and as a result, parents and guardians no longer send their children there. These issues also have an impact on the student’s academic growth, resulting in the school generating half-baked graduates. The government should ensure that this issue is resolved for a better tomorrow.
The first chapter gave the basic backdrop of the students’ topic, the relevance of the problems, and the definition of the words.
The second chapter examined the literature review, which included the school of thought and various approaches of researching the problems.
Finally, chapter three concludes with data display and analysis. There were recommendations and references offered.
CHAPITRE ONE
INTRODUCTION
Prior to the creation of the institute of management and technology (IMT) Enugu, there was a college of technology, as well as the institute of administration and the cooperative college.
Unfortunately, none of these institutions could satisfy the quality of a typical higher education school; most of their courses were restricted to civil personnel. Furthermore, they are unable to offer certificates above the ordinary level diploma (OND).
In an attempt to correct this and progress the courses offered by the aforementioned institution, and possibly bring them up to acceptable standards, the Ukpani Asika administration united the previous college of technology with the college of administration on April 1, 1972.
Nonetheless, the merger of the two-sister schools was unable to meet both the state and national needs. The East Central State Administration established a provisional council in October 1972 to determine the structure of the government,
the appropriate structure of an autonomous institution that would produce high quality technologists and technicians, professional managerial manpower in certain subject areas that will correspond with the state and national needs.
As a result, on May 3, 1973, the edict no. 1973, named “the institution of management technology Edict,” was issued. The Edit went into operation on July 1, 1973, giving birth to what is presently known as the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A hostel, by definition, is a structure that provides cheap food and lodging for students, however this is not the case in Nigerian tertiary institutions. This never appears to be the case. This is what led me to conduct research on the subject.
This study, while focused on higher education institutions, has a special focus on the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu.
It has been established that inadequate hostel accommodation has a negative impact on the actualization of qualitative and standard education in Nigeria, universities, and polytechnics,
which is why we have taken it upon ourselves to investigate the lapses and problems that have heralded to this problem of inadequate accommodation.
Furthermore, there are other issues that encouraged us to conduct research on this topic, which include:
Students were involved in an armed robbery.
Participation of a student in prostitution
Student disobedience is high as a result of not living in an intellectual environment.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Students in higher education are being robbed of their sociological and psychological needs as a result of substandard hostel accommodations, which is one of the challenges linked with this subject. Because privacy is important to students, allowing them to stay in a room causes some psychological distress.
Furthermore, students’ academic pursuits have been hampered, and pupils now pay less attention to studies. For example, I.M.T. has two campuses, and some of the students who live on campus two must now risk their lives in order to travel to the other campus.
Not only that, but the students spend a lot of money on transportation, instruction, and the understanding that the students are meant to learn on the part of the school itself,
and some of the rooms that were built to house students are now being utilised as offices for the students’ stay in the institutes. Some of the rooms are vacant, and this is being wasted due to bad administration, all of which has a negative impact on the students’ academic pursuits.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study will be concerned with the challenges caused by substandard hostel housing as they affect the quality of education in higher institutes, with specific reference to the institute of management and technology (IMT) Enugu, and these are as follows:
As a result of the lack of privacy, the pupils are unable to concentrate on their schoolwork. Students pay less attention to their education and spend much of their time trying to make money because their money has been spent on transportation.
Cultism is about to take over academic activities at school, as most students who live off campus now associate with undesirable characters and become involved in corrupt practises.
The split campus concept exhausts students before they arrive at their lecture halls. Administrative errors have hampered the implementation of measures that could improve the quality of life for students living in hostels.
The fact that, in addition to the hostel costs, students who live in hostels spend a lot of money on food and other recreational activities.
The student claims that they bribed officials in order for rooms to be assigned to them. Why do school officials fail to offer adequate housing for students? For example, at ESUT, there is no housing for students, much alone substandard housing.
Last but not least, we want to know what the administration is doing regarding the insufficient accommodation rooms in IMT, for example, because some of the rooms that were designed to house students are instead being used as offices.
STUDY OBJECTIVE
In general, lodging, regardless of its form or shape, provides adequate comfort and relaxation. To ensure this, it must be capable of providing adequate accommodation and certain basic recreation facilities such as piped water, library centres, and so on. Unfortunately, most, if not all, higher institutions of learning in Nigeria lack some of these basic facilities and infrastructure.
The institution, being more advanced and nationally acknowledged, produced more rooms for the construction of more departments, paving the door for student admittance and the recruitment of more personnel.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The research will be extremely valuable to the leaders and administrators of higher institutions, particularly imt, because it will not only help them trace the origin and effect of the accommodation problem, but will also recommend how to effectively address it.
Above all, the manner in which the researcher accurately located and removed the root causes and effects before rushing out her advice will alert the government to intervene too fast and precisely, thus bringing the problems of poor student academic performance in suitable accommodation.
