PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF TEACHING BUSINESS STUDIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 THE STUDY’S BACKGROUND

Business studies is a branch of vocational education that provides courses in economics, commerce, bookkeeping, accounting, business mathematics, typing, and shorthand.

It is referred to as both commercial studies and business studies in the International Dictionary of Education (1979). The dictionary defines commercial studies of education as the area that includes school subjects such as typewriting, shorthand, bookkeeping, and elementary accounting, while business studies is defined as a study of commerce and management subjects.
This definition, however, does not specify the level of education required to use the title.

The difference in title is purely subjective and has no bearing on the content of the courses at the various levels of education.

 

In Nigeria, the course is known as business studies in secondary school, but at the higher levels, in colleges and universities, it is known as business education or management science, and it covers subjects as well as related courses such as business law, business management, accountancy, marketing data processing, and computer.

These subjects are not studied separately in junior secondary school under the new educational system. As a result of this issue, students who teach business subjects in schools have shown less interest and motivation.

 

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Business education in Nigeria is still in its early stages; when this course was first introduced into our educational system, there was no interest or motivation from the government. According to Nsofor (1979), “the government was not only uninterested in including commercial subjects in the educational curriculum; it also made a deliberate and calculated attempt to frustrate the efforts of the philantiopics.”

Due to the lack of attention that business education received during the introduction stage, efforts by private proprietors have crumbled. The owners paid no attention to the education of business teachers. This could be because of professional complications and financial burdens that were out of their reach.

It is disheartening to note that, despite all of the problems that business education has faced in the past and the opportunities that have been lost to the country, little has been done to improve the situation. Schools and students continue to lack qualified business teachers, which may be due to the previous period being inadequate when compared to the complexities and dynamic nature of knowledge required.

One of the major issues confronting business education today is a lack of equipment that is essential for proper mastery of the subject. As a result of these issues, students who teach business subjects in school have shown less interest and motivation.

Another issue impeding the smooth teaching of business studies in secondary school is a lack of libraries. The significance of which cannot be overstated and will not be discussed in depth in this work.

 

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The goal of this research is to identify the challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning business studies in secondary schools in Enugu state’s Nuskka educational zone.
These are some examples.

1. To identify the issues with teaching and learning business studies in secondary schools in Enugu State’s Nsukka Educational Zone.

2. To determine whether such problems exist in the Nsukka Educational Zone of Enugu State.

3. To determine the scope of these issues, if they exist.

4. To recommend actions to be taken to prevent or avoid/reduce future problems in the teaching and learning of business studies in Enugu State’s Nsukka Educational Zone.

 

1.4 QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH

a. Does a lack of business studies teachers have an impact on the teaching and learning of business studies?

b. To what extent are materials and equipment available in secondary schools for the teaching and learning of business studies?

c. Does a lack of funds contribute to ineffective business studies teaching and learning in secondary schools?

1.5 THE STUDY’S PURPOSE

The study’s goal is to conduct research, dig deep, and learn about the teaching and learning of business studies in secondary schools. It also attempts to blend opposing viewpoints in such a way that it piques the interest of more than just casual readers.

1.6 STUDY SCOPE AND DELIVERY LIMITATIONS

The scope of this study is limited to secondary schools in Enugu City. This is due to time constraints combined with time sharing with other academic commitments.
Finance and the difficulties involved in meeting the required personnel in their various offices are also factors. The narrow scope of the research is intended to allow the researcher to complete the study successfully and effectively.

 

1.7 THE STUDY’S SIGNIFICANCE

The significance of this study is undeniably based on the hope that early identification of existing problems in the teaching of business studies in secondary school will lead to the adoption of measures to eradicate them from the ground up. This will, without a doubt, put the students on the right track in terms of other areas to study. It will also serve as a reference point for future research and will aid the government and the people in designing future educational policies to meet the needs of the people.

 

1.8 BUSINESS EDUCATION PROBLEMS

Business education in Nigeria is still in its early stages.
Because of the limited availability of this course in our educational system. The government showed no interest or motivation.

The efforts of private proprietors began to crumble as a result of the lack of attention that business education received at the beginning stage. The owners paid no attention to the education of business teachers. This could be because of professional complications and financial burdens that were out of their reach.
