CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF PRE MARITAL SEX AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

The study looked into the causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among secondary school students. Premarital sex was found to have an impact on many young people’s social standing and academic performance, particularly among secondary school students. Premarital sexual encounters frequently lead to the belief that sex should be enjoyed in any way imaginable.

This report’s study design is descriptive, with respondents providing information via a questionnaire. This study included 200 (two hundred) respondents to reflect the entire population. Null hypotheses were developed and tested using one-way ANOVA and t-test statistical methods at the 0.05 level of significance.

Primary data were acquired using a questionnaire, whilst secondary data were gathered from textbooks, journals, newspapers, and the internet. The data were presented on a frequency distribution table and analysed using basic percentages, with the hypothesis evaluated using the chi-square test. This study will benefit institutional management, individuals, and society as a whole.

It will also help school counsellors do their jobs more successfully. According to the findings, parents should dissuade their children from watching pornographic films/Internet sites, reading pornographic magazines/write-ups, or reading family planning leaflets.

The government should offer appropriate facilities to educate a girl-child at an early point in life, emphasising Sex Education in their early secondary school years, and build an enabling environment that will better the young ones’ lives.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Premarital sexual behaviour refers to sexual practices carried out by unmarried people that are considered taboo in some societies and sinful in many religions. Sex is a universal term, therefore one would expect to know a lot about it.

The family institution is where sexual activities or intercourse occur between two individuals if opposite sex is not limited to young people; a large number of people who are not married are also vulnerable to pre-marital sex.

This is demonstrated by the significant number of unexpected pregnancies, many of which are terminated in backstreet clinics (Alo, 2008), the high rate of sexually transmitted infections among those aged 15 to 24, and the increasing number of girls dropping out of school due to undesired pregnancies.

As a precursor to the following sections of the study, this chapter will discuss the background material that drove this study, the challenges that prompted it, its purpose, and its aims.

The study’s significance, breadth, constraints, research questions and hypotheses, and technical word definitions are also important considerations.

1.2 Background of the Study

Premarital sexual behaviour among students appears to be a reality that must be addressed. Several research show that students’ premarital sexual behaviours are on the rise and widespread in most African schools (Jones & Espey, 2008; Miyakado & Timothy, 2014; Idoko, Muyiwa Agoha, 2015).

According to a recent survey released by the CSA (Centre for the Study of Adolescents), the age of sexual debut is now at an all-time low of 8 to 12 years; in fact, 8 out of every 10 young people will have had sex before the age of 20.

This increases the risk of unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and dropping out of school. Females are also more vulnerable to the repercussions of premarital and sexually transmitted infections.

If a young girl falls pregnant, she puts herself and her unborn child at risk since her body has not matured to the point where she can safely give birth.

Even if a young woman avoids severe health repercussions, she must nevertheless confront the enormous duties of parenthood. Aside from the fact that she drops out of school and, in rare situations, may never return (AIO 2008), modern society is becoming more free in a variety of ways, making premarital sex more commonplace. Pre-marital sex appears to be producing many social problems, such as disordered households and increased corruption of public morals.

There are numerous difficulties and complications surrounding undergraduate attitudes regarding premarital sex. Many of these arguments are based on ideas, which must be supported by facts and data before they are accepted.

Given how involved undergraduates are in their everyday lives beginning in the post-primary years, it is not unexpected that one out of every four students is unclear if having a sexual connection prior to marriage is appropriate or bad.

The fact that most teenagers or young adults believe that premarital sex is necessary for the sustenance or reservation of the relationship does not imply that it is a legally or customarily recognised right.

However, the media’s frequent promotion and representation of sex outside marriage as a regular everyday event appears to be a motivator for those adolescents or young adults, thereby putting the repercussions behind them.

The onset of antisocial behaviour, such as premarital sex, and its negative consequences, such as unwanted pregnancies, criminal activity, abortion, expulsion from school, and health problems, to name a few, should concern adolescents throughout this time period.

Many Nigerian secondary schools address the issue of teenage pregnancy, although the majority of adolescent pregnancies do not occur within the family. Every year, around one in ten teenage girls falls pregnant.

The age at which a woman has her first sexual experience is either increasing or remaining constant, and these trends correspond to the legal marriage age.

However, according to Mensch et al. (2006), there has been a shift in a number of countries towards an increase in the proportion of women who have sex during their adolescence and before marriage.

Prisoners’ desire to explore sexual experiences is heightened by psychological development and puberty, allowing them to express or act on these feelings with partners who are willing to share their sexuality.

Teenagers have been socialising with their parents, friends, and instructors for a long time. As a result, in Nigeria, where the research was done, the activities included learning about the causes and consequences of premarital sex among secondary school students.

1.3 Statement of Problem

Premarital sex has been shown in studies to have an impact on the social class and academic performance of many young individuals, particularly secondary school students.

Sex is not wrong at any age, except in premarital forms. Sex can have a variety of negative effects on adults’ mental development. Pre-marital sexual experiences often lead to the idea that sex should be enjoyed in every way imaginable.

Forced pre-marital sex can cause mental depression and perplexity. Another risk is the interchange of diseases, as premarital couples may be unaware of diseases transmitted through premarital sex.

Pre-marital sex can cause emotional imbalances and feelings of guilt. This study is intended to investigate the pre-marital effects of Nsukka Local Government Area in Enugu State.

1.4 Goals and Objectives of Study

The purpose of this study is to look into the causes and consequences of premarital sex among secondary school students in the Nsukka Local Government Area. To achieve this goal, the particular objectives listed below were established:

The study aims to identify factors influencing secondary school students’ involvement in pre-marital sex, as well as the risks associated with it.

The study aims to assess the impact of premarital sex on secondary school pupils and provide potential solutions for adult students who experience similar issues.

1.5 Research Questions.

The study developed research questions to determine the above-stated aims. The specific research questions for the project are listed below:

Is there a low level of involvement in sexual education?

Are dropout cases prevalent in the study area?

What are the causes of premarital sex?

What are the risks of pre-marital sex?

What are the impacts of premarital sex on secondary school girls?

What are the remedies to the problems that arise with premarital sex?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

In order to achieve the goal of this study, the following generalised statements have been prepared to guide and aid in collecting the results of the experiment to be done. For the sake of this study, the null hypothesis will be denoted by H0, whereas the alternative hypothesis will be represented by H1.

Hypothesis One.

H0: Premarital sexual conduct will have no substantial impact on secondary school students’ academic achievement in the study area.

H1: Premarital sexual conduct has a considerable impact on secondary school students’ academic achievement in the studied area.

Hypothesis Two

H0: Pre-marital sex had no substantial consequences on secondary school girls in the area of research.

H1: Pre-marital sex has considerable consequences on secondary school girls in the area under study.

1.7 Significance of the Study

Although there is a wealth of material on the question of premarital sex among adult students in our higher education institutions. The study will raise students’ understanding of the different issues that lead to pre-marital sex. As a result, the school authorities will be more sensitive to providing proper protection to students.

This study will benefit institutional management, individuals, and society as a whole. It will also help school counsellors do their jobs more successfully.

The study will help society and individuals understand the necessity of abstaining from premarital sex relationships. The study will also help to reduce sexually transmitted diseases and undesired pregnancies.

Furthermore, the findings can help raise awareness in higher education institutions about the relationship that is responsible for premarital sexual relationships. It will minimise the prevalence of pre-marital sex while also encouraging young people to “zip-up” and abstain until marriage.

Furthermore, this study will be incredibly beneficial to other researchers who want to learn more about it, and non-researchers can use it to supplement their own research efforts. The findings of this study increase knowledge and could serve as a paradigm for future research.

1.8 Scope of Study

The purpose of this study is to examine the causes and consequences of premarital sex among secondary school students in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The study focusses on the causes and consequences of premarital sex participation among secondary school students. This study will also look at how premarital sex affects secondary school students.

Furthermore, the research will make recommendations on how to prevent secondary school students from engaging in premarital sex.

1.9 Limitations of the Study

During the course of this investigation, some issues arose that served as constraints to the research activity. Some of the constraints are:

Initial Cooperation Delay by Respondents: A significant limitation of this investigation stemmed from the respondent’s refusal to offer cooperation when first contacted. This contributed to the difficulty of completing this research investigation.

Time Constraint:Due to the school academic calendar, the time window allocated to complete this study was extremely short, and it was carried out under pressure, causing the researcher to overlook several critical characteristics.

Financial constraints: Insufficient funds tend to restrict the researcher’s efficiency in accessing relevant materials, literature, or information, as well as in data collecting (internet, questionnaire, interview).
