THE CONTRIBUTION OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA NURSES AND MIDWIVES
ABSTRACT
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives’ Professional Development program helps members of the profession preserve, enhance, and expand their knowledge, skills, and competence while cultivating the personal and professional attributes needed for success in their careers.
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives’ Contribution to the Professional Development of Nursing in Nigeria was the focus of the study.
In order to accomplish this goal, the following particular goals were established: to analyse the contributions that nurses and midwives make to the national development of Nigeria and to look into the issues that hinder the National Association of Nigeria’s efforts to support nurses and midwives.
The results of the investigation showed that nurses and midwives must participate in mandated Nurses and Midwives Professional Development in order to practise safely and competently while meeting the level of competence demanded by the profession and the healthcare users.
Particularly in Africa, where access to high-quality healthcare services continues to be a significant obstacle and impedes the achievement of the SDGs, such engagement enables universal health coverage through quality person-centred care.
While secondary sources included textbooks, journals, newspapers, and the internet, primary data came from the primary source, which was a questionnaire utilised as a data gathering tool.
A frequency distribution table was used to display the data, and the chi-square test was used to test the hypothesis and analyse it using simple percentages. Nurses, midwives, and researchers who want to learn more about this study will find it quite helpful.
Non-researchers can also use it to expand their research. This study advances our understanding and may act as a model for future research.

1.1: Introduction
Nigerian National Association The process by which nurses and midwives maintain, enhance, and expand their knowledge, skills, and competence as well as cultivate the personal and professional attributes necessary for success in their careers is known as professional development (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016:4).
Nurses and midwives must participate in mandated Nurses and Midwives Professional Development in order to reach the level of competence demanded by the profession and healthcare users, as well as to practise safely and competently (Ingwu et al., 2019; Ross et al., 2013).
Universal Health Coverage (UHC), especially in Africa, where access to high-quality healthcare services continues to be a significant obstacle and impedes the achievement of the SDGs, is made achievable through such participation and excellent person-centred care (Hasumi & Jacobsen, 2014).
The backdrop that motivated this investigation, the challenges that prompted it, and the study’s aim and objectives will all be covered in this chapter as an introduction to later sections of the research.
Additional factors include the study’s significance, scope, research questions and hypotheses, study limitations, and technical term definitions.
1.2 Background of the Study
Context of The Nurses and Midwives Professional Development Program (NMPDP) is a strategic learning initiative that aims to enhance professionals’ knowledge, skill, and competence through educational and experiential training (Lucy, Johnson & Long, 2012).
According to Banning and Stafford (2008), NMPDP is a process of lifelong learning for all individuals or groups that aims to address the needs of people and deliver high-quality healthcare.
Due to the development of information and skills that are necessary for evidence-based practice and superior health care delivery, the healthcare industry is constantly evolving and developing on a global scale (Banova, 2014).
Furthermore, NMPDP programs and structures have changed from being a single professional educational design and formal instructive training approach to innovative, dynamic, and learner-focused educational models (Lawrence & Kathy, 2018).
In Nigeria, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, introduced the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program in March 2010 with the aim of: promoting good leadership qualities managerial and organizational skills among nurses thereby enhancing preceptorship and mentorship as a tool for building a dynamic profession;
to expose nurses to current development as well as new trends in health and nursing care; to sharpen the knowledge and skills of nurses on better ways of rendering qualitative, individualized, goal directed nursing care using the process approach;
to constantly bring to the fore health issues and conditions that constitute serious health challenges to the individuals, families and communities at large;
seek to correct significant deficiencies and weaknesses that militate against qualitative nursing care delivery in health care institutions and at community level and to be a requirement for participation in council’s activities and assignments as well as nerve (N&MCN, 2012).
In order to guarantee nursing education standards, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) was established with the first official nursing education, which was a school of nursing established in 1949.
Nursing education has undergone a significant shift since the NMCN was founded (NMCN, 2016). In order to keep up with the evolving roles of the nursing profession, nurses have developed a wide range of educational backgrounds, advanced scientific and technological knowledge, and increased literacy levels as a result of the emergence and reimagining of nursing education from a vocation to a high standard of professionalism (Ayandiran et al., 2013). However, there are still certain problems, such embracing change, supervision, and direction, as well as a lack of mentorship, inadequate professional growth, and political pressures on Nigerian nurses’ educational system.
In order to improve their practice and provide patients with high-quality care, healthcare practitioners are expected to participate in required continuing professional development programs (Lawrence & Kathy, 2018).
Continuing Professional Development Programs have been recognised as a crucial tactic for enhancing fundamental professional abilities for nurses in both developed and developing nations (Chong, 2013).
According to Carey & Courtenay (2007), nurses play a crucial role in providing direct, tailored care to patients with a wide range of medical disorders at all levels of health care delivery.
They must get interested in lifelong continuous professional activities in order to fulfil their professional obligations. Similarly, nurses bear personal responsibility and accountability for nursing practice and for sustaining competence via ongoing learning, according to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Code of Ethics (ICN, 2012).
Therefore, the actions that were carried out in Nigeria, the country where the research was conducted, were to find out how the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives contributed to the professional development of nursing in Nigeria.
1.3 Statement of the Problem

To investigate the contributions that nurses and midwives make to the national development of Nigeria; To elucidate the notion of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives in the Professional Development of Nursing in Nigeria;
To examine the elements impeding the National Association of Nigeria’s responsibilities to nurses and midwives; and To suggest solutions for the issues mentioned above that are affecting the National Association of Nigeria of Nurses and Midwives.
1.5 Research Questions
In order to determine the aforementioned goals, the study developed research questions. The following are the precise research questions for the study:
Are there any obstacles preventing the National Association of Nigeria from fulfilling its obligations to nurses and midwives?
What contributions do midwives and nurses make to the national development of Nigeria?
What does the Nigerian Nurses and Midwives concept mean for the country’s nursing professional development?
What are some potential ways to get rid of the obstacles that the National Association of Nigeria of Nurses and Midwives faces in its work?
1.6 Research Theory
The following generalised statements have been created to help guide and aid in collecting the results for the experiment to be undertaken in order to pursue the goal of this study. In this study, hypothesis H0 will stand for the null hypothesis, and hypothesis H1 for the alternative hypothesis.
First Hypothesis
H0: The National Association of Nigeria’s functions towards nurses and midwives are not significantly impeded by any considerations.
H1: A number of important reasons limit the National Association of Nigeria’s ability to support nurses and midwives.

1.9 The Limitations of the Study
Numerous factors hindered the completion of this investigation, including the following:
Time Restraint: Because of the school academic schedule, the researcher had a very small amount of time to complete this project. Additionally, the project was completed under pressure, which prevented the researcher from implementing some essential elements.
Research material: One significant obstacle to the study’s scope is the availability of research material.
Frequent power outages: In order to provide sustainable power, the researcher had to spend more money on fuel.
Financial Restraint: A lack of funds often makes it more difficult for the researcher to find pertinent literature, resources, or information and to gather data (internet, questionnaire, and interview).
