THE EFFECTS OF POOR INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Introduction
1.0 Chapter One
1.1 Background of the Study
Infrastructure is a global indicator of a nation’s greatness and degree of development. The stock of infrastructure assets has a beneficial impact on growth.
Of all the developments that have occurred in Nigeria since political independence, the country’s infrastructure process is arguably the most remarkable and fascinating.
According to experts, it is surprising that decades after Nigeria gained political independence or self-governance, the government and its citizens continue to struggle with the twin issues of infrastructure development and impending degradation that appear shortly after they are put into service.
The majority of the world’s nations, particularly the less developed ones, have varied degrees of economic inequality, but urban areas benefit from and do exhibit political administration, infrastructure, and a high rate of poverty, ignorance, and diseases. Moreover, rural-urban migration is largely caused by economic neglect. Saying that there are enough infrastructure amenities in rural areas is pointless.
Infrastructures are fundamental services that must be installed in order to facilitate development. The existence of social and economic infrastructures in Nigeria can help to expedite and facilitate socioeconomic development at all levels. The nation’s heart-acting poverty, which has raised the poverty rate, was caused by the lack of socioeconomic development.
Development will be extremely difficult and infants can be compared to a highly scarce product that can only be obtained at a very high price and cost if socio-economic infrastructures are not in place, claims Busari Ayansola (2012).
Sufficient infrastructure provision is essential to the development of rural communities. Development is fuelled by infrastructure provision in order to eradicate issues such as poverty, frustration, ignorance, diseases, crimes, and rural-urban migration, which predominates in rural regions, since increased productivity and competitiveness necessitate higher levels of infrastructure provision.
In order to address internal socioeconomic issues, successive administrations have, in one way or another, made a concentrated effort to improve rural infrastructure, which has been reflected in the primary goals of rural development in Nigeria.
It is obvious that the socioeconomic growth of Khana Local Government Area cannot be separated from the development of its infrastructure. to demonstrate the quality of life and the enhancement of their amenities.
Development should be understood as an improvement in the mental, physical, spiritual, and other aspects of life brought about by the availability of food, shelter, education, and a decrease in poverty, according to Angaye (1995).
The study sparked interest in determining the impact of inadequate infrastructure on the socioeconomic development of Khana Local Government Area because infrastructure has grown in importance in the country’s growth.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
These days, inadequate infrastructure is recognised as an issue. It is crucial to understand that the majority of the impoverished reside in rural areas, such as Khana Local Government Area, which is distinguished by a lack of or inadequate infrastructure, including roads, electricity, portable drinking water, a reliable communication system, health facilities, recreational parks, and so forth.
In rural locations, the lack of facilities makes life unpleasant and unappealing. Massive rural-urban migration, mass mortality, and a spike in various diseases are all results of inadequate infrastructure; low productivity impedes socioeconomic progress.
Income-generating activities such as mat weaving, fishing, tool and carving making, tape, poultry, and small-scale business that, if seriously pursued, might serve as the foundation of mini-industries in rural areas have suffered due to a lack of communication and transportation.
The elderly and frail are left in charge of agricultural and artisan trades because they lack the energy, skills, and capacity to transform them into sources of income.
Inadequate health facilities and recreational areas have also been linked to higher mortality rates, depression, poor health, and emotional instability, all of which shorten life expectancy.
Development has impacted Nigeria’s political, medical, educational, and agricultural sectors due to inadequate infrastructure.
Khana Local Government Area lacks adequate infrastructure, and the government, nonprofit organisations, and concerned individuals have not made any more substantial efforts to create the much-needed infrastructure in Nigeria’s rural areas.
1.3 The Aims and objectives of the study
The purpose of this study is to ascertain how Khana Local Government Area’s socioeconomic development is impacted by inadequate infrastructure. The particular objectives of this study are to ascertain in order to achieve this goal.
the impact that infrastructure has on socioeconomic growth.
the government’s endeavour to provide Khana Local Government Area with infrastructure facilities.
the impact of inadequate infrastructure on Khana Local Government Area’s socioeconomic growth.
1.4 Significance Of The Research
It is impossible to overstate the significance of the research study. As a result, the study is conducted in a different way, and its findings will be used as a reference for scholars in the future.
Additionally, it will give sociologists and non-governmental organisations working in rural planning the chance to understand the potentially significant contributions that rural areas make to the general advancement of society.
The study will help us understand the necessity (value) of infrastructure in our people’s socioeconomic lives, particularly in Khana Local Government Area.
Additionally, the study will raise awareness of the consequences of the inadequate amenities in Khana Local Government Area.
1.5 The scope of the study
The impact of inadequate infrastructure on the socioeconomic development of the Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State was the main subject of this study.
The work of inadequate infrastructure in rural areas, especially in Khana Local Government Area, is its main focus. The researcher’s interest in this research issue was sparked by their perception of the negative effects of the Local Government Area’s lack of infrastructure.
1.6 Research Questions
Based on the aforementioned perspective, this study posed the following research question to direct the investigation. The researcher poses questions in the hopes of receiving responses that will lead to the study’s solution (Uwazie, 2008).
What infrastructure is required for Khana Local Government Area’s socioeconomic development?
What consequences result from Khana Local Government Area’s inadequate infrastructure?
What part do infrastructure facilities play in Khana Local Government Area’s socioeconomic development?
