PUBLIC LATRINE SYSTEM AND ITS ASSOCIATED PROBLEMS
ABSTRACT
A large number of public latrines constitute a severe concern for the residents of Awka, as well as others throughout the country. The problem of open defecation, sometimes known as “going to the bush” or “bush shitting,” has long been difficult to handle in Awka and Nigeria due to a lack of decent public and home toilets in both towns and rural areas.
Many individuals in Awka do not have access to appropriate sanitation, and they must select how to defecate on a regular basis without feeling guilty or afraid. Were two hypotheses formed?
To investigate the link between disease outbreaks and public latrines, as well as the necessity of providing latrines in public locations. The study’s data came from both primary and secondary sources, including a questionnaire survey of Awka people.
According to the findings, there are insufficient latrines in public settings such as markets, public complexes, and even hostels, causing the few that exist to be abused and neglected.
The test results suggest that decent latrines and residents’ quality of life are strongly related. The study’s suggestions include proper provision of public restrooms and lavatory facilities, as well as funding and maintenance of toilet facilities. It is hoped that the study’s suggested actions will help to improve the lives of citizens in Awka area.
