ABSTRACT

This study looked at personality traits and delinquent behaviour in adolescents from selected secondary schools in Lagos State’s Mainland Local Government Area. This study reviewed relevant and substantial literatures under subheadings.

With the help of a questionnaire and a sampling technique, the descriptive survey research design was utilised to examine the opinions of selected respondents. In this study, 120 (one hundred and twenty) individuals were chosen and used as samples. These representatives represent the entire study’s population. In addition, four null hypotheses were developed and tested in the study, with the independent t-test and the Pearson Product Moment Statistical tools used at the 0.05 level of significance.

The following results were obtained at the conclusion of the analyses: There is a significant relationship between youth personality and delinquent behaviour; there is a significant gender difference in the personality of adolescents in school; there is a significant gender difference in the delinquent behaviour of youths in school; and finally, there is a significant difference in the behaviour of delinquent youths and those who are not.

1.1 Introduction: Background Of The Study

What makes us think, what makes us the way we are, what makes us exhibit a particular attitude or behaviour that is unique to an individual is that individual’s personality. Personality, according to Onuoha (1994), is a person’s wholesome quality or action.

Personality is derived from the latin word “Persona,” which meaning “mask,” as opposed to a mask that may be worn or removed. Personality indicates stability. It consists of all the consistent ways in which one person’s behaviour differs from that of another (Darey, 1982). Personality, according to Eysenck (1967), dwells within the individual.

The idea that personality has a substrate dates back to the ancient Greek theory of the four humours. Personality, according to Eysenck, can be reduced to three biologically grounded aspects of individual variation: extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. According to Eysenck (1967), changes in extraverted conduct are the result of functional differences in a specific region in the brain. He also hypothesised that introverts are more aroused than extroverts, and that the same stimulus would result in a higher increase in arousal for introverts than for extroverts.

According to Omoegun (1996), the teenage child exhibits a number of difficulties that are typical of the adolescent stage. This is a separate stage of personality development characterised by considerable changes in growing conditions and extensive reorganisation of personality structure.

This is true across many cultures, with variable degrees of stress experienced as a result of the implications of sexual maturation, sex role, and new personality features with adults’ roles and position in the community.

Adolescents in schools behave differently, according to Anayo (2000). Some teenagers live an introverted existence in which they are not outgoing, not outspoken, shy, moody, shun association, and so on, whereas extroverts are outgoing, always speak out, mix with friends, and are more gregarious than introverts.

The problem of delinquency among teenagers in schools refers to the problem of wrongdoing by young people, which includes truancy, stealing, vandalism, terrorism, drug addiction, and other anti-social activities.

Because they are in the era of peer group relationships, adolescents desire to be seen acting in conformity with their peers, no matter how unorthodox such act may be (Onwuama, 1988). As a result, there is a need for some understanding and responsible individuals from the background to serve as role models for the young stars, directing their energies in the proper direction and producing gratifying and satisfying patterns of conduct in them.

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of personality on young delinquent behaviour in our society. This is because youths are known as tomorrow’s leaders, and their undesirable behaviour will have an impact on the entire society and mankind. As a result, when the kids are told to adopt the correct behaviour, it causes them to break laws and regulations in society, causing deviation among the youths.

It is no surprise that stolen examination, malpractice, sexual promiscuity, rape, abortions, and young pregnancy are prevalent in society. This study is therefore critical since it will assist educators in determining exactly what to do in order to provide good assistance to teenagers who engage in delinquent behaviour or acts of indiscipline.

It will also assist career counsellors in determining which methods to employ when advising delinquent adolescents. This will assist the school counsellor in directing the kids to exhibit the desired or adaptable behaviours in the community.

This study will help to raise awareness in the society as a whole. The findings and recommendations of this study will enable the society to deal with or handle the adolescents in such a way that they will manifest positive personalities that will enable them to achieve their goals in life and join hands to build a strong progressive Nigeria in the future.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

The issue of personality types and delinquent behaviour in secondary school students cannot be overstated. Adolescents have a variety of problems that are typical of the adolescent stage. Adolescents behave differently in schools. Some are extroverts who are gregarious, outspoken, sociable, and restless, while others are introverts who avoid relationships with peers and other members of the community.

The problem of delinquency among youths in schools involves wrongdoing, ignoring established authorities, and breaching the rules and laws imposed by adults on a given society. These issues include stealing, prostitution, fighting, vandalism, and terrorism, as well as the use of strong drugs and drinking, which frequently leads to indiscriminate sexual activities, rape, and sexual harassment in our schools and society. Because of the unfavourable personalities of today’s youth, society’s norms and anticipated values are deteriorating.

The aforementioned problem prompted the investigation of the association between certain personality types and delinquent behaviour among adolescents in schools and society.

1.3Purpose Of The Study

The primary goal of this study is to investigate the association between personality and delinquent behaviour in some chosen secondary schools in Lagos State’s Shomolu Local Government Area. Minor goals include the following:

1. Determine whether there is a link between the personality of the kids and their delinquent behaviours.

2. Determine whether there is a distinction between youths who engage in delinquent behaviour and those who do not.

3. Determine whether there is a gender difference in the delinquent personality of teenagers in schools.

4. Recognise the deviant behaviours of the adolescents in society.

5. Propose a remedy to the problem of youth delinquent behaviour.

1.4Research Issues

This study will address the following research questions:

1. Is there a link between young people’s personalities and their delinquent behaviour?

2. To what extent will delinquent young people differ from those who are not?

3. Is there a gender difference in the personalities of students in schools?

4. How can problems with delinquent behaviour among youth be identified?

5. To what extent may the problems of juvenile delinquent conduct be resolved?

1.5Research Proposals

In the study, the following research hypotheses will be developed and tested:

1. There will be no significant association between adolescent personality and delinquent behaviour.

2. There would be no substantial gender differences in delinquent behaviour among teenagers in schools.

3. There would be no substantial gender differences in delinquent behaviour among youths in society.

4. There will be no discernible difference in the behaviours of delinquent kids and those who are not.

1.6The Importance of the Research

The following people will benefit from this research:

(1) Students: Students will benefit from this study since its recommendations and findings will keep them informed about the topic of delinquent behaviour. This subject will teach students how to avoid behaviour that are contrary to values and anticipated norms in a civilised social situation.

(2) Teachers would have a better understanding of the effects of delinquent conduct and the many sorts of personalities that pupils exhibit in school. The study’s recommendations and conclusions might, in some ways, offer a solution to the problem of delinquent behaviour among pupils.

(3) Through this study, parents will learn more about delinquent behaviours and the best ways to teach their children and wards how to prevent them.

(4) The society will view this study as a golden opportunity to gain in-depth information of what constitutes delinquent behaviour among adolescents in school, and so on.

1.7Scope and Limitations Of The Study

This study will look at the association between certain personality types and delinquent behaviour among chosen secondary school pupils in Lagos State’s Shomolu Local Government Area.

The research will focus on the Shomolu Local Government Area of Lagos State. Because the researcher is solely interested in the Shomolu Local Government Area, the findings’ generalizability is confined to the local government area in question.

However, given the extent of the study, it is impossible to describe all of the delinquent problems displayed by all teenagers in Lagos State secondary schools. The findings can only be applied to other adolescences or youths in comparable circumstances. Other issues may arise among adolescents in Lagos State, but this study will focus on the ones mentioned in the hypothesis. Other constraints will include a shortage of funds, a short time schedule, and other logistical issues in carrying out this investigation.

1.8Definition Of Terms

In this study, the following terms were defined:

1. Relationship: This relates to two people’s mutual understanding, love, and affection. It is also the likeness of two variables. It refers to the relationship that exists between two objects.

2. Personality: This refers to what causes people to think or act the way they do. Individual characteristics in personality are what make an individual unique or different from other persons in society. It refers to a person’s completeness or fullness.

3. Delinquency: This is the problem of wrongdoing among adolescent school-age children. Youth delinquency involves disrespect for the law and others. It is the contempt for societal norms, morals, and legislation. It leads to stealing, terrorism, drug misuse, fighting, vandalism, prostitution, and other vices that violate society’s rules and regulations.

4. Behaviour: This is how an individual carries himself/herself in the environment in which he/she lives. It is the sum total of one’s manner of life.
