Background for the Study
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has seen substantial demographic shifts in recent decades (Aigbokhan, 2020). With an expected population of more than 200 million, the country is dealing with the complex interplay between population dynamics and rising unemployment (Aiyedogbon & Ohwofasa, 2022).
This difficulty is exacerbated by the population’s rapid expansion, which raises serious worries about the potential impact on unemployment rates (Aminu and Anono, 2022).
To solve this issue and promote long-term economic development, it is critical to understand the dynamics of Nigeria’s population growth and unemployment rates.
Nigeria’s demographic situation has changed dramatically, with unprecedented population growth (Chen & Li, 2021). This demographic surge puts enormous strain on essential sectors like as education, healthcare, and, most importantly, employment (Gordon, 2023).
The labour market, in particular, faces the onerous burden of absorbing an increasing number of job searchers (Granville & Mallick, 2006). The repercussions of this demographic problem are profound
as the job market struggles to accommodate the growing population, directly affecting the country’s unemployment rate (Gujarati, 2019).
The relationship between population trends and unemployment in Nigeria is a complex problem that requires careful examination. Historical trends in population growth shed light on the trajectory of this dilemma.
A complete review of population growth over the last two decades is required to comprehend the scope of the problem (Ibrahim & Umar, 2018). Such an investigation enables policymakers to detect patterns and potential tipping points in population dynamics that could worsen unemployment.
Simultaneously, patterns and changes in unemployment rates during the same time span must be examined (Johnson & Brown, 2023). By doing so, researchers can determine the direct influence of population expansion on the labour market, pinpointing periods of high unemployment that may coincide with population increases.
This empirical approach allows for a data-driven understanding of the relationship between demographic shifts and unemployment difficulties in Nigeria.
Furthermore, investigating the causal relationship between population trends and unemployment is critical to determining the underlying causes of this complicated problem (Kale, 2022).
Economic factors such as GDP growth and industrial output have the ability to function as mediators in this relationship. Understanding how these economic variables interact with population dynamics to affect unemployment rates is critical for developing targeted policies that address the underlying causes of unemployment.
Government policies and initiatives influence the impact of population growth on unemployment (Ogbeide & Agu, 2021). Analysing the success of previous policies and finding shortcomings in their execution might provide useful lessons for future policymaking (Okoroafor & Nwaeze, 2023).
This aspect of the research is critical for ensuring that recommended solutions are informed by evidence-based methods and have a significant impact on addressing unemployment concerns.
