RELEVANCE OF SOCIAL WORKERS IN SCHOOL OPERATIONS
Abstract
This investigation focused on the value of social workers in ile ife’s educational system. The study’s 200 staff members from a few Ile Ife secondary schools make up the entire sample. Questionnaires were utilised by the researcher as the instrument for gathering data.
This study used a descriptive survey research approach. The survey used a total of 133 respondents, including made principals, vice principals, academic employees, and non-academic workers. Simple percentages and frequencies were used to analyse the data, which were presented in tables.
Chapter One
Introduction
Background Of The Study
Immigration, personal challenges, social conditions, and poverty all had an impact on the growth and expansion of educational possibilities for all children and contributed to the emergence of the field of school social work in the 20th century (Allen-Meares, 2006; Agresta, 2004).
Social workers sought a specialised role in offering emotional support for troubled children during the Great Depression (1930).
refocusing their earlier commitment to improving unfavourable conditions in the schools and serving as the link between home, school, and community (Hall, 1936).
The name “visiting teacher” was then changed to “school social worker” in the 1940s and 1950s, and the profession embraced a more therapeutic and clinical approach for specific students within the schools (Agresta, 2004).
Regarding the contrast between human nature and its social surroundings, there has been debate throughout the history of special needs education. It is debated if a child’s psycho-medical body or cultural notions of normality and deviation are the primary causes of their particular requirements.
The resolution of this dispute determines whether the student or the educational institution is the focus of intervention. Even while this was originally the work of teachers, especially in the school setting, there are questions about who the performers in this are.
The field of social work advocates for societal change, human relations problem-solving, and the emancipation and empowerment of individuals to improve wellbeing.
Social Workers intervene at the point where people interact with settings using social work techniques and under the direction of social work theories.
According to the International Association for Schools of Social Workers (IASSW) and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), social work is fundamentally based on the principles of social justice and human rights.
According to Kang’ethe in 2014, social work is a crucial humanistic profession that is respected as a discipline that can address the various vulnerabilities that members of society experience. Social workers are essential in fostering a child’s social and emotional growth.
To provide the best assistance for students to stay in school, school social workers work in collaboration with parents, teachers, and administrators (Huang, 2017).
The function of social workers is varied, and there are various ways school social workers can use their expertise, competencies, and morals to better the lives of kids.
On an individual, group, and community level, social work skills must be included into the educational system, especially when working with kids who have special needs.
Social workers are employed by schools to help at-risk and special needs pupils. From school to school and county to county, the specific social work role in relation to these pupils varies. Some schools hire social workers to deal with a single large population or across several schools.
The roles and responsibilities of a school social worker are varied, but four fundamental duties have been highlighted as being shared by all school social workers. They consist of, but are not restricted to: as a team member, consultation with other members of the educational system.
They do assessments in relation to numerous jobs in direct assistance, advice, and programme creation. In addition to helping with programme creation, they directly intervene with parents and kids in individual, group, and family settings (Constable, Kuzmickaite, Harrison, & Volkmann, 1999).
The general population and the systems that provide social services are unaware of what social workers do. Some students pursuing careers in social work are also unaware of their obligations after graduation. Advocacy is a crucial task that social workers must perform.
Statement Of The Problem
School social workers are qualified mental health professionals who can help with academic and classroom support, academic and behavioural support, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators, and individual and group counseling/therapy. They can also assist with mental health concerns.
The inability to properly address the issues they come across, working within a system that frequently lacks necessary resources,
and bearing the emotional weight of students and their families are some of the main difficulties that school social workers meet. The researcher wishes to look into the importance of social workers in school operations in light of this backdrop.
Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study are;
To determine the effect of a social worker on a student’s academic performance
To determining the social worker’s role in helping students attain their objectives
To investigate how students see social workers’ efforts to help students achieve their goals
To determine the significance of social workers in education
Research Hypotheses
The following has been proposed for evaluation.
H0: A social worker has no effect on a student’s academic achievement.
H1: Social workers have an effect on students’ academic achievement.
H0: Social workers are not given enough credit in schools
H1: Social workers have a crucial role in education.
Significance of the research
This study will provide a thorough understanding of the value of social workers in ile Ife’s school operations. Students as well as the ministry of education will benefit much from the study.
The study highlights the significant duties and difficulties faced by social workers in education. The work will also be used as a resource by other researchers who will pursue the associated subject.
Scope and Limitations Of The Study
The relevance of social workers in ile ife’s school operations is covered by the study’s purview.
The study’s scope was constrained due to a constraint the researcher encountered;
a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher’s access to suitable research material limits the investigation.
b) TIME: Because the researcher must juggle the study with other academic obligations and exams, the time allotted for the investigation does not improve wider coverage.
c) FINANCIAL CONSTRAINT: A lack of funds tends to limit a researcher’s ability to collect data (through the internet, a questionnaire, and interviews) and locate the necessary materials, literature, or information.
DEFINITION OF TERM
SOCIAL WORKER: Social work is a field of study and a career that focuses on enhancing social functioning and general well-being for individuals, families, groups, and communities.
A student is primarily a person who is enrolled in a school or other educational institution, attends classes in a course, and dedicates time outside of class to complete the assignments the instructor assigns that are necessary for class preparation or to submit evidence of progress towards that mastery.
In a larger sense, someone who devotes oneself to the intense intellectual engagement required to master a subject as part of any practical concern in which such mastery is fundamental or decisive is considered a student.
Life goals are important things to strive towards and complete, such as getting hitched and starting a family, opening your own business, rising to the position of senior executive, or taking an extended trip.
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER: A school social worker serves as a key link between kids, parents, faculty, and staff as well as the local school system.
