RESTRUCTURING ACCESS ON WEB PAGES TO THE LIBRARY’S PROGRAMS, SERVICE
Abstract
This paper discusses the restructuring of library and information science curricula in response to the challenges of the ICT environment. The following areas are highlighted in the paper: conceptual framework, qualities of Library and Information
Science curriculum, rationale for restructuring library and information science curriculum, areas in library and information science curriculum that require changes, roles of National Association of Library and Information Science Educators (NALISE), Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN), and other related bodies in restructuring library and information science curriculum.
The following Information Communication Technology (ICT) courses have been identified as ICT fields that can be integrated into the curriculum: electronic resource management, management of social media tools, website design and management, networks and networking, software design and management, database design and management, innovation and creativity.
The paper reveals that the curricula of the majority of library schools in Nigeria examined do not include some ICT components relevant to librarians in training in order for them to be effective in modern society.
The paper’s implication is that heads of library schools in Nigeria should identify curriculum gaps and take pragmatic measures in reviewing and restructuring the curriculum for library and information science education professionals capable of delivering in an ICT-dominated society.
