RISK FACTORS OF CONTRACTING SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS AMONG STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
The goal of this research is to investigate student behaviour and sexual activities that expose them to contracting sexually transmitted infections, students’ level of awareness of sexually transmitted infections, and factors that combine to determine the risk factors for contracting sexually transmitted infections.
This study used a survey research design with a structured questionnaire; the population was primarily students from the Ekosodin community; a simple random sampling technique was used; and the data and information acquired were analysed using frequency counts and percentages.
The results show that the students have a high level of awareness concerning sexually transmitted infections, showing that awareness level is not a risk factor of contracting sexually transmitted infections.
Students disputed the fact that pre-marital sex is a factor responsible for sexually transmitted infections, which is not in accordance with WHO’s (2005 & 2008) global estimates on the incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among youths from 15 to The response to students’ attitudes regarding the use of contraception revealed that it is not a factor contributing to sexually transmitted infections and, to a large part, the reasons why students engage in sexual activities.
The researcher offered recommendations that will be utilised to prevent, regulate, and educate students about the danger of developing sexually transmitted illnesses.
