ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES IN FOOD PRODUCTION

ABSTRACT
Modern forms of cooperatives sprang from the tensions and opportunities provided by industrialization and urbanisation in Europe during the nineteenth century.

Much of the early interest in cooperative structures seems to stem from a genuine concern about the social consequences of industrial capitalism, with critics of the new order viewing it as more than just a framework for economic organisation, but also as a vehicle for the repurposing of radical social and political aims.

However, many conceptions of cooperatives have been obliterated, as have the assertions of earlier social prophets; however, a residual conviction persists that co-operators are motivated by both community and self-interest, and that non-economic and economic goals can be achieved.

Other propositions present difficulties in applying economic analysis to the study of Co-operatives. It is pertinent and a restrictive device of immense capacity that co-operative organisations have paid the way for the new economic and social order.

We must always remember that co-operatives are organisations run by and for members, hence they are created to meet the requirements of members.

Agricultural cooperatives have been formed to address economic issues, increase food production, and develop a better, more just, and equal society.

They serve to provide individuals with control over a portion of their destiny by voluntary cooperation and mutual support, transforming people into asters of their own fate, subjects rather than objects of history. Cooperatives are, of course, realistic institutions that take into account the realities of concert aims.
