ROLE OF BROADCAST JOURNALISM IN ASHANTI REGION

Chapter one

Introduction

Background of the study.
Broadcast journalism includes everything from online news to the evening news, which thousands of Americans watch every evening. While television news is simply one component of broadcast journalism, it is the most popular among the United States’ news audience.

For the most of broadcast journalistic history, the prestige of reporting raw facts over personal viewpoints defined broadcasts. However, there was a transition in the late twentieth century in several television networks that provided broadcast journalism.

Instead of emphasising on a broadcast’s unbiased integrity, some networks shifted to reporting for a specific audience on one side of the political spectrum. The words used on television, like in any other form of journalism, are critical to interpreting the report’s content.

Because specific phrases in the English language have the capacity to alter a viewer’s emotions, it is clear that examining a potential shift in the message viewers unintentionally perceive is worthwhile.

Sentiment analysis refers to the classification of words as good, negative, or neutral. Polarity refers to the connotation that a word has for its reader when taken out of context with other words around it.

Positive polarity phrases convey a positive sensation to others, whilst negative polarity words have the opposite impact. This study uses a vocabulary to create a wide list of regularly used English words with positive, negative, and neutral polarity, which is then compared to the transcripts of numerous GBC Nightly News broadcasts.

These years were chosen because they occurred before and after prominent broadcast news networks on television shifted their concentration to one side of the political spectrum.

Observing GBC programmes from various years reveals not just aesthetic changes in broadcasting style with music and set selections, but also a shift in anchors and reporters over a thirty-year period. Aside from surface changes in GBC broadcasts, the fact that a new idea for specialised news networks on television, such as Fox News and MSNBC, emerged during those thirty years raises the question of how that happening affects other networks in the field of broadcast journalism.

This study will look at that subject, with a specific focus on how reporting language develops over time. Sentiment analysis applied to reporting language in GBC Nightly News programmes over time provides a direct picture of how an ideologically center-left news network responded to a shift in the field around broadcast journalism.

GBC’s center-left stance suggests that the network rarely focuses on conservative or liberal-biased news topics, only occasionally deviating from that perspective to highlight more liberal problems.

Statement of the Problem

The inquiry focuses on the issues that Ghana’s broadcast media will face in the next millennium. In regards to the Ghanaian broadcast company

The study will look into how these difficulties affect Ghana’s broadcast media in terms of information gathering and dissemination. It will also identify all the constraints that lead to inefficient coverage by Ghana’s broadcast media.

The study’s aims are:

To determine the role of broadcast journalism in the Ashanti region.

To learn how GBC competes with foreign broadcasting media such as the BBC, VOA, CNN, and Radio France.

To discover the challenges of broadcast journalism in the Ashanti region.

Research Hypotheses

To ensure the study’s success, the researcher developed the following research hypotheses:

H1: Broadcast journalism plays an important role in the Ashanti region

H02: There are no challenges for broadcast journalism in the Ashanti region.

H2: There are challenges of broadcast journalism in Ashanti region.

Significance of the Study

The study will have a tremendous impact on students and the Ghana Broadcast Corporation. The study will provide a thorough understanding of the role of broadcast journalism in the Ashanti Region.

The study will highlight the problems they encounter. The study will also act as a reference for other researchers who would engage on the similar issue.

Scope and limitations of the study

The subject of the study is the role of broadcast journalism in the Ashanti Region. The researcher faces various constraints that limit the scope of the investigation;

a) AVAILABILITY OF RESEARCH MATERIAL: The researcher has insufficient research material, which limits the investigation.

b) TIME: The study’s time frame does not allow for broader coverage because the researcher must balance other academic activities and examinations with the study.

1.7 Definition of Terms
