Abstract

This study focused on the role of communication in improving organisational productivity. A case study of Federal Polytechnic Ekowe, Bayelsa State. The study’s entire population is 200 federal polytechnic Ekowe staff from Bayelsa state.

The researcher employed questionnaires to collect data. The descriptive survey research design was used for this investigation. The survey included 133 respondents who worked as HODs, senior lecturers, graduate assistants, and junior staff. The acquired data were displayed in tables and analysed with simple percentages and frequencies.

1.1 Background of the Study

It is essential that any type of organisation, which wishes to pursue an activity in full accordance with the society in which it exists, begins the work based on a pre-set plan, a carefully designed management strategy, as management represents a vital aspect of the functioning of the organisational and social systems

especially in the conditions of the modern era, marked by the increasing complexity of technological and informational products, radical transformation. In this situation, we believe that managerial structures must intervene to respond to any organisational changes.

Communication is often referred to as the network that binds together all the members and activities within an organisation through “communication” is a highly ambiguous term that stems from the latin word “communiqué” is meaning to share, to make common to behave for the purpose of this study,

I shall define it (communication) as the preference of information is, sharing of ideals and instructions of feeling between individual or groups of individuals and within or be However, the dissemination of this information, beliefs, and actions may be coordinated in order to achieve organisational goals and individual pleasure.

However, in order to accomplish this, management must determine the form and content of any communication. To do things properly, it is necessary to first determine the specific objective of this communication, as well as to thoroughly assess the knowledge, understanding, interest, and attitudes of those who will receive the information.

As a result, management of kinds bears a significant responsibility for ensuring that adequate communication occurs in their organisation. Communication has thus become an indispensable function of people and organisations, or the organism relocates its part and its environment and relates its part and its internal processes to one another. That is to say, communication is the lifeblood of every real existing organisation.

However, it is worth noting that communication, even between friends, is at best difficult and, at times, impossible to achieve, regardless of their relationship. It is therefore expected that where hierarchical relationships exist, as in federal polytechnic

Ekowe, and where interpersonal feelings are sometimes more negative, even more attention and effort is required to yield the level of understanding necessary for efficient operations. Despite the intricacy of the process, communication has fundamental implications for managers and supervisors.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Information is not just passed down from boss to subordinates. It also emanates from subordinate to supervisor; at federal polytechnic, it is not only between organisations, but information can also be passed horizontally, for example, from one department to another. Failure to communicate effectively has become a constant source of friction between departments in the workplace.

If one delves into the causes of some of the constant conflicts that develop within departments or between individuals, one would discover that the majority of them arise because “we were not informed”.

Many good managers have been demoted because key decisions impacting their departments were made without their involvement. Poor communication in federal polytechnics can lead to conflict, which is detrimental to efficient and effective communication and, ultimately, the success of the organisation concerned.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY

The researcher seeks to attain the following precise objectives:

To assess strategies for developing effective communication within an organisation.

To assess the role of communication.

To identify challenges to successful communication within an organisation.

To determine the relationship between communication and organisational productivity.

Research Hypotheses

The following hypothesis are formed:

H0: There are no techniques to improve good communication inside an organisation.

H1: There are techniques to improve effective communication inside an organisation.

H0: no association exists between communication and organisational productivity.

H2: There is a link between communication and organisational productivity.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The study will help the federal polytechnic, its personnel, and the organization’s overall consumers. It will reach its production, sales, and profit targets without any bottlenecks. Employees will always have access to materials for uninterrupted manufacturing.

Huge financial gains will ensue, increasing their pay and bonuses. Consumers will receive quantity and quality goods and services on time. It is also hoped that this contribution will be beneficial to students, professionals, researchers, and instructors looking for knowledge in the field of polytechnic.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

Communication may be as important as achieving large profits for organisations. This emphasises its value to organisations, which formed the basis of this study by determining what function it could play in increasing productivity in federal polytechnic, Ekowa, Bayelsa state.

The researcher planned to limit himself to the role of effective communication at the Federal Polytechnic in Ekowe, Bayelsa State. This resulted from my belief that the purposes and techniques of communication in polytechnic management will undoubtedly reflect what happens to organisations and their many types.

The researcher’s choice of federal polytechnic is therefore guided by the current geographical proximity, which may offer me simple access to important documents and data that may aid in the success of the investigation.

 

Limitations of the Study

Every research effort has restrictions. This one is not an exception. Certain factors restrict the process of authoring this research paper, including:

Insufficient research materials.There were extremely few study materials on this topic. The heavily relied-upon library is stocked with out-of-date books that have little relevance to contemporary study. Furthermore, the cost of new and upgraded materials is prohibitively expensive.

Subjective non-cooperationSourcing information from responders was not a simple endeavour, especially as some of the information was classified or highly secret to the corporation, and the Hamdala Hotel staff cooperated minimally.

3. Low questionnaire return rate In the process of obtaining data, it was discovered that not all questionnaires distributed were returned. Some of them were also incorrectly filled out, implying that a wealth of valuable information was withheld, which could have improved the study’s quality.

Inaccessibility of themesAnother restriction observed during the investigation was the inaccessibility of the inventory management manager, who was not always available to supply requested data. Despite the aforementioned limits, the researcher was able to deliver an unprecedented study work.

Definition of Terms

COMMUNICATION: This is the transfer of information from one person (sender) to another (receiver), with the information understood by the receiver.

Internal communication involves the internal components of an organisation, such as people, structure, money, and technology.

PRODUCTIVITY: Productivity refers to a variety of measurements of manufacturing efficiency. A productivity measure is frequently expressed as the ratio of an aggregate output to a single input or an aggregate input used in a manufacturing process, i.e. output per unit of input, usually over a set period of time.
