ROLE OF GOOD GOVERNANCE TOWARD EFFECTIVE POLITICAL STABILITY IN NIGERIA

Chapter one

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Good governance contributes significantly to the growth of sustainable development. It encourages accountability, openness, efficiency, and the rule of law. Furthermore, it enables sound and efficient human resource management, resulting in equitable and sustainable growth.

According to former United Nations Secretary General Kofi (2008), “Good governance is perhaps the single most important factor in eradicating poverty and promoting development; it serves as the pivot around which other developmental activities revolve.”

Human growth serves as the conduit for all other forms of development. Similarly, Kayode and Soyode (2004) argue that successful development efforts necessitate strong governance

which is governed by intelligent political leadership acting within a stable political system that generates an enabling environment in which capable individuals are motivated to perform efficiently.

In the same line, Diamond (2004) claims that the main cause of development failure is not a lack of resources or international isolation. Rather, a lack of effective governance fosters development by fostering and defending widespread devotion to the public good.

Public administration is at the heart of modern states. It is widely acknowledged that it plays an important role in all cultures, whether developed or developing. In the modern state, public administration has grown so crucial that our development upliftment and progress depend mostly on its proper functioning.

Evans (2006). It serves as the foundation of government. A government can exist without other branches of government, such as the legislature and the judiciary.

But no government can function without administrative machinery. All countries, regardless of their political structure, require some form of administrative apparatus to carry out public policies.

In addition, public administration is in charge of enforcing government laws and programmes. It governs people’s behaviour in society by enacting laws; by carrying out policies and programmes, it delivers the promised goods and services to the intended recipients.

The importance of efficient public administration is highlighted by the fact that government policies and initiatives cannot be implemented without effective public administration. To put it another way, even the best government policies and legislation may remain mere paper declarations of intent if the administrative machinery does not perform smoothly.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Good governance in Nigeria, as it is today, faces significant problems in achieving effective stability. This segment critically examines these obstacles. Corruption is one of the obstacles to good administration.

The government has not performed well in terms of good governance, which is one of the most important tools for achieving their stated objectives. Indeed, corruption among government leaders has been the most significant impediment to good governance in Nigeria.

Similarly, corruption has hampered leadership development. Most Nigerian government leaders are unaware of the objectives or the impact that good governance has on the people.

As a result, when elected, many officials use the opportunity to defraud the state by saving money in other states rather than investing in the state and focusing on the main reason he/she was elected.

Such local administration is characterised by unexecuted, unfinished, and inflated contracts (Onoja, 1986:3). He also stated that the employment system is localised, with the most competent applicants being sacrificed for unqualified ones.

The challenges of achieving good governance are numerous, but the most significant is corruption. This study aims to analyse the importance of good governance in achieving effective stability in Nigeria, using Akwa Ibom State as a case study.
