INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

According to the co-operative law of Eastern Nigeria (CAP.28) of 1956, a co-operative society is an association whose goal is to promote the economic interests of its members or to provide services to them in accordance with co-operative principles. As a result, cooperatives are self-help projects.

Abinitio, co-operatives were not supposed to be influenced or controlled by the government; nevertheless, co-operatives were not supposed to work in isolation or competition with the government. In all states of the world, political power is exerted by the government for the benefit of the state.

The government protects lives and property while simultaneously providing and enacting legislation that allow businesses and cooperatives to grow. Beyond the level of labour done solely for the benefit of the member and the betterment of the entire society.
