ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN CRISIS MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background for the Study
Communal confrontations have long been a regular feature in poor countries around the world, including Nigeria. These are caused by ethnic, religious, tribal, and land disputes, as well as boundary adjustments.
Boaten (2000) defines ethnicity as a group of people who have a shared socio/cultural identity, such as language, worldview, religion, and cultural features.
Thus, ethnic groups are social formations differentiated by the communal nature (such as language and culture) of their boundaries. N’oli (1980). In other words, ethnic groupings are categories of people characterised by cultural symbols such as language, value systems, and normative behaviour, and whose members are anchored in a certain territory.
Otite (1990). Actually, the term ethnic comes from the Greek word ethnos, which refers to a group of people who share a shared and distinct culture.
According to Imobighe (2003), the classical definition of ethnic refers to a member of a specific group. According to Imobighe, ethnicity should be defined as a sense of belonging to a specific cultural or linguistic group, or as a manifestation of ethnic consciousness in comparison to other groups.
Conflicts emerge when individuals or organisations pursue divergent interests, ambitions, and aspirations in defined social and physical settings. Otite (1999). According to the research, ethnic conflict arises from perceived socio/cultural divides.
In reality, Otite (1990) defines ethnicity as contextual discrimination by members of one group against others based on a differentiated set of socio-cultural symbols.
He affirms that ethnicity has the traits of common group consciousness and identity, as well as group exclusivity, which is used to make social discriminations. In most situations, as demonstrated by the Nigerian experience, this leads to violent intractable conflict.
1.2 Statement Problem
This study investigates the function of mass media in crisis resolution, with a focus on Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka.
Research on communal crises and media roles is typically challenging, if not impossible. This study investigates the role of mass media in crisis resolution.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the origins of communal crisis in Nigeria.
2. Determine the effectiveness of ABS Awka’s mass media coverage of the communal conflict.
3. To understand some of the issues that are causing mainstream media coverage to be inadequate.
Communal Crisis
4. To investigate the role of mass media in addressing communal crises?
5. How has mass media improved the relationship between people?
Communities?
1.4 Research Questions.
1. What is the leading cause of Nigeria’s communal crisis?
2. How effective is the media’s coverage of communal crisis?
3. Are there any problems, and is the media’s coverage of the communal situation inadequate?
4. How can mass media help to address communal crises?
5. How has mass media improved relationships between members of the community?
1.5 Scope of the Study.
The scope of this study is determined by the issue of the research effort; the study will be limited to communal clash. Because it is impossible to include all conflicts that have occurred in Nigeria.
Despite these restrictions, the research findings will be generalised, allowing the researcher to focus on this Local Government in Anambra State (Nnewi South).
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will help media practitioners and mass communication students understand some of the issues and roles of mass media in crisis management.
The research will aid the government by allowing them to learn from the public opinion of respondents about the tactics they should use to prevent communal confrontations and to see the pains that people are experiencing.
Academically, the study will serve as an extension of knowledge to future scholars.
This will also allow other researchers to look at other aspects that this study may not be able to cover.
