ROLE OF NIGERIA MEDIA IN PROMOTING ACCOUNTABILITY IN GOVERNMENT
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the function of Nigerian media in fostering government accountability, using Anambra state government as a case study.
The goals of this study were to investigate the level of media responsibility for ensuring government accountability, to determine how well the media informs citizens about their right to demand greater accountability from the government, and to determine Nigerian perceptions of the media’s fairness in reporting government activities.
The scope of the study is Anambra state in 2020, with information theory serving as a framework. The research design for this study is a survey, and the demographic targeted for this study is all residents of the state. The sample size was 400 inhabitants, and the cluster sampling technique was used. This study’s instrument is a questionnaire.
Data were acquired from original sources. According to the data analysis, the media has aided in ensuring government accountability in Anambra state; the media has provided citizens with a reasonable level of information about their right to accountability from the government of Anambra state; and the media has been fair in its reporting of government activities in Anambra state.
Following the findings, it was recommended that the media be allowed to operate independently without external interference or threat, that the media be provided with adequate equipment and professional manpower to perform its duties properly
and that corruption among media houses and media personnel be completely eliminated. The study shows that mass media has a significant impact on the population.
Chapter one
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background for the Study
The globe is rapidly becoming a global village, and communication, in which mass media plays an important role, is an essential instrument for this process. The Nigerian media has made significant progress in the fight for democracy and accountability in the country. The media has played an active role from its establishment.
A democratic society relies heavily on the media as a watchdog. The basic democratic purpose of the media is to provide a check on the state. The media should observe state actions and fearlessly expose abuses of official authority (Curran, 2002).
The media speaks for the people, reflects the interests of society, and acts as a check on the government. This process holds the government accountable, and the media plays an important role in ensuring effective governance in a democratic system.
The media has an important role in fostering a healthy democracy and guaranteeing good government. Transparency, accountability, and involvement are core concepts of good government.
As an important source of public information, the media could be expected to promote good government. The media, or the media, is a primary source of information and entertainment. They are also a means of conveying messages, which can help communities grow into nations. They are sources of information.
The interaction between media and governance systems has been considered as having an impact on Africa’s unpredictable developmental tide (Okoro 2013). The media has the power to influence the way and manner in which individuals, groups, and governments think and act.
The media has the ability to correct people’s beliefs and opinions about specific topics. The media is an excellent tool for changing behaviour
. According to Jibo (2003), the Nigerian media was a key political actor long before the country was formed as a unified political entity, and it has continued to play an important role in national politics ever since. The mass media is the driving factor behind the establishment of democracy in any political system.
The purpose of this study is to examine the function of Nigerian media in fostering government accountability: a case study of Anambra state government.
1.2. Statement of the Research Problem
Every government aspires to achieve sustainable development and accountability. Accountability in Nigerian governance continues to be a challenge.Although it is well known that good governance is critical to sustainable development
the relationship between good governance and the sustainability of such development through media has yet to be fully appreciated (Langmia, 2010; Okoro, 2010). Governance refers to how power is used to govern a country’s economic and social resources.
It is distressing to notice that Nigeria’s administration continues to perform poorly in terms of accountability. However, it appears that the administration has tried a variety of measures to resolve the issue, including allowing the media to play a part. Based on the evidence available to us.
Section 22 of Nigeria’s 1999 constitution states that the press, radio, television, and other mass media institutions must be free at all times. Many journalists have died while doing this critical function of transferring the government’s responsibility and accountability to the public. (Jide, 2018; Punch.NG)
In Nigeria, the ability to ensure government accountability depends on the media. Given this context, the researcher considered the study of the function of Nigerian media in promoting government accountability: a case study of Anambra state government.
