ROLE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS IN ACHIEVING MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

INTRODUCTION

This project is the outcome of observations regarding how public relations might help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

People have been unaware of the Millennium Development Goals for many years, while the government believes it can do it all on its own, which is impossible. This is what fuels people’s desire to follow the government’s initiatives for achieving millennium development goals.

The Millennium Development Goals are intended for the people to assist alleviate immediate problems in our varied environments, yet the public is not informed about the initiative. This initiative will employ public relations as one of the strategies to communicate the Millennium Development Goals to the public.

This project work will benefit the general public because all of the goals are intended for them.

In order to strengthen the economy, governments from all over the world gathered to discuss each country’s economic position, and they discovered that the rich are increasing richer while the poor are becoming poorer. In light of this, they investigated what causes the inequality and eventually identified eight difficulties that they labelled as aims.

This subject has received little attention over the years, which is why this effort aims to enlighten individuals and provide them with insight into serious topics.

Significance of the Study

This research will inform the general population about the government’s programme to make life more comfortable for them through the Millennium Development Goals. It will also allow us to consider the role of public relations in attaining our objectives.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

Due to time constraints and limited resources, this study will only cover Osun State.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

This project’s replies are intended to benefit the broader population. The questions are:

To what extent are people aware of the MDG goals?

What benefits can be derived from the Millennium Development Goals?

To what extent may public relations help to attain Millennium Development Goals?

Definition of Terms

Some words in this project task need to be defined.

Clear understanding!

PUBLIC RELATIONS: According to the British Institute of Journalism’s most popular and commonly recognised definition, public relations is “the deliberate planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.”

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a set of eight time-bound development goals aimed at addressing concerns such as poverty, education, equality, health, and the environment by 2015.

They were agreed to by the international community during the United Nations Millennium Summit, held in New York in September of 2000.

3

The New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD): The African continent’s statistics on common concerns are shockingly terrible. Africans make about 12% of the world’s population, while their GDP consumption of global wealth amounts to barely 1%.

In addition, Africans are the most infected with HIV/AIDS, malaria, polio, typhoid, TB, and other diseases. In terms of political instability, one out of every five Africans lives in conflict zones.

All of this and more spurred important African leaders, including the presidents of Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, Senegal, and Egypt, to establish NEPAD in 2000.

4. Nigeria’s National Economic Empowerment

Nigeria’s economic development strategy (NEEDS) is outlined here. It is the people’s method of telling the government what sort of Nigeria they want to live in, both now and in the future.

It is the government’s means of informing the people about how it intends to overcome the deep and persistent barriers to advancement that the government and people have recognised.

It is also a mechanism for Nigeria to communicate with the international community about its regional and global standards, as well as how it intends to be supported.

5. MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING: The goal of public relations is to promote mutual understanding among its audiences. This refers to a two-way communication system and endeavour that allows an organisation to understand its publics while also allowing the public to understand the organisation, causing it to intentionally and continuously engage in conversations of action that are in the best interests of its public.

PUBLICS: Public relations is concerned with the connection between an organisation and its numerous publics. Thus, public relations emphasises the importance of maintaining great relationships between an organisation and all of its stakeholders, including both internal and external publics.

Operational Plans

The survey approach will be used to get people’s opinions in this type of research. The project will collect data via a questionnaire.

Sampling Procedure

This research work will use stratified sampling. We utilise this sampling strategy when we have a heterogeneous or big non-related population that can be separated into non-overlapping homogeneous strata, and then we take a strata sample from each stratum. Simple random sampling will be used to select samples from each stratum.

Population of the Study

The sample size for this study will be 100 persons from Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. Osogbo was chosen to represent the entire region due to limited resources and time.

Characteristics of the Study Population

This study’s sample population will include both males and women, students, working and non-working classes.

Limitations of the Study

This study will only include information from primary and secondary sources of data collection. Thus, the information acquired may not be applicable to the entire country. Furthermore, the research activity shall be restricted to academic purposes.
