Academic libraries and information services have suffered unprecedented changes and transformation as a result of information and communication technology (ict). Taking recent trends in ict and the Nigerian situation into account, this work elicits the impact of ict in nigerian public academic libraries. The primary objectives were to determine the usefulness of ict resources, the effectiveness of ict resources, the required skills in using ict resources, and the factors militating against the effective use of ict.
The case study was the university of uyo in akwa ibom state. The survey research design was used, and the questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. To analyze the collected data, simple tables and percentages were used.
The research work revealed that the university of uyo library is automated/computerized, and that they use strategic library automation management (slam); only three divisions of the libraries are computerized/automated, which are readers services division, technical services division, and collection the study also demonstrated that ict has a huge impact based on its effectiveness.
Management’s inadequate training and retraining of staff; inadequate funding, epileptic power supply, and lack of search skills are the major factors resisting the effective use of ict in nigerian university libraries. Inadequate funding, capacity building, and regular power supply were recommended among others.
