SMARTBIN: EFFICIENT WASTE HANDLING BASED ON THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

Chapter one

1.0 Introduction.

1.1 Background and Motivation.

The Internet of Things is a fast expanding technology in the IT industry. The Internet of Things refers to internet-connected and controllable devices. According to Sandeep et al. (2017), advances in technology have enabled various gadgets to connect to the Internet.

Sensors are being integrated into mobile devices and other communication hardware, allowing them to transmit signals to the Internet via technologies such as Wi-Fi, 4G, and 4.5G.

Driving down into various commercial areas of Yola, it is clear that waste is not well handled, as some areas remain largely polluted. The Internet of Things can help solve this challenge.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM.
Waste management is nearly non-existent in the country’s north, particularly in Adamawa State. Private companies took up the task and have been working tirelessly to ensure proper waste disposal.

Despite the efforts of private companies, the majority of the state remains in disarray, with waste littering the ground. Improper waste management poses a significant threat, necessitating the development of an efficient system (2).

SmartBin is a system that monitors the level of trash in many cans via the Internet and alerts the user when levels reach a certain threshold. These smart trash cans have ultrasonic sensors and a Raspberry Pi that can communicate with the Internet.

1.3 Objectives of the study

The goal is to create an intelligent system for garbage bin detection utilising Internet of Things technologies. This technique has the potential to significantly reduce the amount of abandoned waste littering the environment.

1.4 Outline of the Report

Chapter 1 thoroughly describes the system to be constructed, as well as its issues and objectives.

Chapter 2 describes the prerequisites for developing the system. These requirements include functionalities, hardware, and the connection of the numerous devices utilised to construct this system.

Chapter 3 provides an overview of the system’s architecture and development. It begins with hardware design, then moves on to high-level design, process design, and finally software design.

Chapter 4 discusses the future implementation of the system as well as its conclusion.
