SMS BASED RESULT CHECKING SYSTEM FOR FACULTY OF SCIENCE.

Chapter one

Introduction: 1.1 Background of the Study
Internet-enabled computers have greatly improved communication. The telephone system, which was invented several years ago, has greatly improved, leading to the development of wireless and mobile phones.

Mobile phones now offer features such as SMS and MMS, making them more useful. SMS is widely used for communication and has been used to provide services such as airline ticketing, banking, and commercial services like share and sell (MTN Nigeria pioneered this service, which has since been adopted by other brands, including Airtel’s me2u).

Subscribers can easily share and sell airtime, among other things. SMS is a mobile technology that enables sending and receiving text or binary messages to and from mobile phones.

To ensure precise time and information management, it’s important to have a system that can deliver alarm text messages automatically. Effective time management is crucial for success in any undertaking, especially in a university setting with limited room (lecture halls), time, and personnel to convey content effectively.

It’s crucial to provide students and guardians with access to results and necessary information without requiring them to attend the school. Handheld gadgets, like mobile phones, allow for easy communication with individuals regardless of their location.

A system that combines available resources and uses a GSM module to send SMS messages to individuals is necessary. Java is a portable object-oriented programming (OOP) language that may be used to create enterprise-scale applications, as well as apps for mobile devices such as cell phones, pagers, and personal digital assistants.

The application was developed using both OOP and C# programming languages. The desktop SMS application generates updates and reminders based on staff contact details, automating and documenting the process of sending information across an organised system at a reduced cost.

Figure 1 illustrates the system architecture, which uses SMS via a circuit switched GSM network to send and receive messages via the modem interface.

Figure 1.1: System Architecture of the Proposed System.

The mobile operator charges for SMS messages as if they were sent and received on a phone, using an enhanced AT command set that follows prescribed specifications.

A GSM module can be a dedicated modem device or a normal GSM mobile phone with a serial, USB, or Bluetooth connection and software driver. It connects to a computer or server’s serial or USB port and sends SMS messages at a low cost.

The system uses a database to store student information, including names, exam IDs, matriculation numbers, phone numbers, courses, credit points, semesters, and grades.

This would be generated using MySQL and installed on the server hosting the programme. When the programme starts, the system checks the database for updated results before sending the message to the GSM module.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This focuses on how students access their exam grades. I found communication channels for information distribution at CRUTECH, as well as related weaknesses of interest:

i. Students can check semester exam results on a single notice board at the school’s main campus.

Non-resident students who do not have internet connection or pay for transportation to campus must contact people in the school region to inquire about published examination results.

iii. The existing school portal system requires an internet bundle for access, making it pricey.

To improve administration, an SMS-based solution should be developed to reduce bottlenecks and provide personal access to examination results.

1.3 Goals of Study
This research aims to build and implement an SMS-based result checking system for the Faculty of Science.

This work will focus on the following:

i. Create access to the school’s outcome database.

ii. Create a code to check results using the Registration number.

iii. Create a code for verifying existing and non-existent results.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The SMS-based examination result system can save students time, money, and protect academic privacy.
Instant SMS replies save time over searching and laborious procedures.

The system does not require internet access, allowing students to obtain their exam results anytime and from anyplace.

1.5 Scope of Study
This study focuses on SMS-based result transmission, rather than other technologies such as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). This study focuses solely on result checking and does not incorporate other services such as mobile distant learning, student profile access, or CGPA calculation due to topic constraints.

1.6 Limitation of Study

Although this method benefits consumers, it also has limitations.
In SMS messaging, an SMS service provider sends and delivers messages from users/applications to recipients’ mobile phones, as well as from mobile phones to an SMS server for delivery to users/applications.

To send and receive messages with a message server, you must pay one or more GSM service providers for the service and link the SMS server to their SMS centre. The Faculty of Science pays for USSD authentication due to the high cost, which many persons cannot afford.

ii. Concerning the limit of characters per SMS set by the
